Vera I have passed the info on to the second cousin who is more directly connected to Thomas, if he wants to pay for it that is up to him, sounds like a bit of a gamble what you get for your money.

Hope you get some good info from that FMP/SofG record. At £14 I would want history back to the year dot..

A lot of military entered Prison Service after retirement as did some School Board men (no women then).

Hello Ann. Unless I have got the wrong family this one says he is an Assistant Prison Service. Burtis is a mistranscribre for Burton.

What are the Civil Service Evidences of Age?

The CSEoA are files for established civil servants and civil service examination candidates, collected by the Civil Service Commission (CSC) from 1855 in order to establish accurate birth dates for the purpose of either ensuring that an examination candidate was of the required age, or granting a pension.

By the 1980s, the CSC still held original documents for approximately 60,000 individuals, consisting largely of items that it would be impractical to replace, such as personal testimonials or documents from overseas. This important genealogical collection was deposited at the Society of Genealogists (SoG) and provides unique and often irreplaceable evidence of birth for which other sources are unlikely to be available. It might more properly be titled the Remains of the Civil Service Evidences of Age, as it is estimated that it constitutes only 2% of the papers originally held by the Civil Service. The remaining 98% were destroyed by the Civil Service.

Sorry Ann that I didn't get back to you, I was out this morning at at the dentist this afternoon. What Vera found is the same as I found. I don't know why it is connected to the prison serve.

I have the Merchant Navy docs for Thomas Gladwin senior but nothing for his son. How much does that cert cost? I don't have FMP.

Although I have had a lot of help from Mike, Neither of us have come up with the refs to enable me to get a birth certificate. Derek did say that he had the records to follow up what he'd found so i am wondering if he also had the refs. I am adding to this in the hope that Derek may find time to emerge fro Derbyshire and tell me what he has. Thanks derek if you have time.

Yes, that is him. I don't know but they often made mistakes and Littleover is not very far from Upton. Maybe he was born in Upton and they actually lived in Littleover.

Pretty certain he was born Gladwin, from his marriage cert his father was also Thomas Gladwin R Marine like him. In 1861 he is on board ship, in the remainder he is with his wife Margaret Julia and his family. He is missing in the 1851, He may have been in Ireland as we think his father came from wexford.

-Is this the same Thomas Gladwin ?
Why would his birthplace change so precisely.
