in 1901 Edward Hallis was probably already in south Africa as a Railway official his wife Lillian Alice Hallis was living with her father + mother Thomas + Mary Hird her occupation was given as milliner
the 1912 shipping record is a edward coming back TO GB on a visit via Mozambique in 1912 he was a resident of South Africa by then
George Hallis also went to US and his wife Mary Eliza Hallis nee Long went with him or joined him daughter Rose Hallis
i haven't found their shipping records but
have been told there is evidence of them on Familysearch
Rose Mills (born Hallis) aged 49 married Stewart Frank Mills aged 54 both divorcees
at port shepston Natal south Africa

Thanks ; Mary ;another step closer to finding a maternal cousin for my mother (thru adoption) . Robert (member with Hallis family on his tree) kindly emailed 5 marriage certificates .my mother especially pleased because the one she sent for was printed. wheras these have her grandfather Samuel Hallis' original signature as witness to martha's wedding . we now have some more clues on addresses too ; george was at victoria (illegible) for his marriage in 1897...don't know how long he lived in Norwich but his death ,probate and burial in 1935 are all in birkenhead Edith's death was given as 10 stoke st in 1906 but this could be a hospital address as she lived with her parents in1901 aged 30 Edward married from 38 bright st birkenhead in 1897

Spellings ; I think HALLIS is the correct spelling as it's the one on all documents so far ; so don't persue any more HOLLIS family members !
even the census are pretty consistent (if we ignore the 1881 Wallace spelling). So tho the story of 3 workhouse brothers is lovely it's probably 2 stories Much better that "our" Martha Harriet was Samuel's daughter + not his neice tho.
I'll take up the hunt and maybe look for their graves .

Re 3 workhouse brothers ; looks like John +Robert were the sons of William Hollis but our Samuel Hallis was son of Edward Halls a labourer so my original premise was all wrong back to drawing board ...he may have had some sisters in that workhouse .

I wonder if the weekly affiliation payments from G.J Fellman for illegitimate Maisie Roberts could have been transfered from her mother Charlotte Roberts to Samuel Hallis who was after all paying for her care from at least 1901 . "Boarder" does imply payments ....which were supposed to last until she was 14 in 1913 but by 1911 she is down as adopted daughter .

The other Martha Hollis daughter of John Hollis in Toxteth EDIT is not connected . I suppose I've now lost the link between the brothers and they could even be different families (*yesthey are). Too busy looking for descendants to trace back ancestors .

Could this be the marriage??
Marriages Sep 1864 (>99%) Hallis Samuel W Derby 8b 870 Healey Mary Ann W Derby 8b 870
In the 1811 census I think that Samuel should be noted as Son-in-law married to her daughter. The 4 children below them could all be children of Samuel and Margaret/Mary Ann, grandchildren of Sarah??
Is this the 1871 census? The dates all seem to be the same or similar?

yes that's my ggma charlotte thread wow you seem to have found one of our missing census years we'd never have thought of looking for Wallace but all the ages correspond This can't mean Sarah Healey is Samuel Hallis's mother too young to have had at least 3 other children in the decade before . If she's Margaret's mother then Harriet Martha isn't technically her gma as she's the daughter of samuel's brother John by 1881 she was living next door to her uncle samuel .lovely to know that they were already close /
This also means that the young Edward Hollis i found in the industrial school in1881 isn't the same family what a relief .
I wonder what spelling will turn up if we ever find the 1871 census
the mystery increases I wonder if Mary Kerfield was Samuel's 2nd wife ? or if margaret And mary are the same woman .
