Driscoll Report 26 Aug 2013 22:12

Susan Driscoll did marry William Dowsett and end up living in the same house as her Driscoll in laws, and sister and law were in 1901 census, 8 Elephant Lane.
She and Thomas seem to have had another child in 1992, Susan. I think Susan jun may have married a Harrison......but still finding out.
Keen to hunt Thomas b 1880 and think he remained in Rotherhithe.

Census 1991 - Looking to track this boy Thomas, aged 11. I think sister, Mary Ann married John Lowden Smith. Father Thomas died in 1894, not sure what happened to Susan, or Suzanne as she often is recorded as.

Does anyone know how I can get hold of any information of St Olaves Workhouse registers? I suspect my Driscoll's were part of this. Some births were also recorded at Horsleydown which I think is attached to St Olaves?

Driscoll Report 11 Feb 2013 01:37

Found - Thomas Driscoll (1855)m Suzanne Dudley - died TB 1894 mother Kate present at death
Mary Driscoll (1857) m John McCarthy two daughters married two Child brothers, London. Have made contact with descendent.
James Driscoll (1858) died of TB 1881
Catherine (1859) m Mark Henley died 1893.

Mother Kate (nee Neil/Neale) Driscoll died in 1901, not sure yet about John Driscoll.

Not sure what became of Johanna, Ellen, Bridget, Laura and Margaret b between 1860 - 1872 last 3 in St Olaves.
I know they were part of the Catholic church of Rotherhithe, Sister of the Immaculate Conception (?) but don't know how to get records for this church. I know they exist as Mary (McCarthy's) descendent photographed hers.
Any ideas?

Wedding certificate for Jeremiah Driscoll and Bridget McDonnell states that Jeremiah's father was John Driscoll - laborer
Bridget's father was also a Jeremiah (McDonnell) who was a butcher. All lived at Rineen.

Driscoll Report 4 Jul 2012 19:37

Got a clue from the Parish saying that a John and Ellen Driscoll had died in 1945 and 1949 in Clonakilty Mt Carmel hospital were related to my family.
I picked up their hospital records and it says they were siblings and came from Rineen. I got to their graves, crosses with numbers on, no details.
I have located their Parents -Jeremiah Driscoll and Bridget McDonnell, births of 6 children including John and Ellen in the Castlehaven Parish, sometimes as Union Hall, but recording the Rineen location.
Now what I am trying to work out is how Jeremiah is related to my John. I suspect they are brothers but as the Castlehaven register does not go back before 1855, I cannot find them.
I suspect there were a few brothers, some of whom left around the 1860 for a 'better life' elsewhere. Mine to England.
Jeremiah, Bridget, John and Ellen were all living together in Forenaught, Castlehaven in census 1911, Jeremiah 70, Bridget 68, John 41 and Ellen 30 ( but she was born in 1879 so this is not entirely accurate. John is listed as ex Navel Seaman. His parents declare they had 7 children with only two alive, but I wonder if some emigrated, and have never been heard of again.
Can anyone offer some clues for extending this research?

Nope, Hannah Kate Driscoll died young. I am back to Ann Driscoll born 1868 to John and Catherine Driscoll (nee Neale or Neil). So back to Rineen, Cork trying to find their parents. Anyone researching Neils? or Driscolls?? in this area near Skibbereen - the nearest big town.

Driscoll Report 17 May 2012 01:52

Jonesy
I think you may be correct and Hannah (Annie) may well be the Hannah Kate born in 1866 to William and Martha Driscoll. I have sent away for certs.
Back to the drawing board.

Thank you, belatedly Jonesy. :-D

Driscoll Report 5 May 2012 23:06

1906, Annie or Hannah Driscoll's son Edward Walter Driscoll (or possibly Hollingsworth) born. Cannot seem to find a birth index number to order his birth certificate. His baptism records Rotherhithe, St Barnabus recorded Mar 7th 1906,has his birth date as 4 Feb 1906.
Ancestry records don't show index record for him. Can anyone give me a record number?

Driscoll

Driscoll Report 2 May 2012 18:39

I forgot to put here that I got a copy of Annie's birth registration confirming that John Driscoll and Catherine Neale (Neil) were her parents. And also that Johns occupation was Granary labourer, which ties in nicely with the Rineen link as that little place was centred on a large mill.
So, I think I have the right family. The only glitch could be if this Anne, is not the Annie or my family. So, I have been working through any other Ann or Hannah born in Rotherhithe about this time to attempt to rule them out. One other looked like a real possibility ....until I found her death in the 1890's. I burst out with "Yeah! She's dead!....giving family a bit of a shock.
So, so far this looks like my kin, and my homeland in Cork. Thank you!
Pity the Castlehaven records don't go further though. :-) :-)

Don't really know where to look for a marriage of John and Catherine given that there are no records available from Castletown and Myross parish for the time. I am a novice to genealogy, and don't know the area either. The Driscoll families seem complicated. Probably the Neil family is too, but I am going to the O'Driscoll clan reunion, so am focussing on finding out anything I can. Thanks for any advice.

Driscoll

Driscoll Report 29 Apr 2012 05:35

OK....I am trying to weed out the different Driscoll families. My Great Great Grandfather is recorded as being a Granary Labourer on his daughters birth record. On this record it also confirms his wife as Catherine Neale (which is Neil or O'Neil). I have confirmed their other children were born in Rineen between 1855 and 1870, the others were born in Rotherhithe incl my G Grandmother. Rineen is a little place that revolved around the mill.

But, there seems to be another couple by the same names living very close by, in Union Hall, and naming their children by similar names. Most confusing when it comes to looking at the family in more modern times.

Given that mine named their eldest son Thomas, I wonder if this could be the name of Johns father? Or James is the 2nd son. First two daughters are Mary and Catherine. I am most happy at being able to get back this far,...but.....this stuff is addictive isn't it? I would very much like to find out if there is existing 'kin' living in the area as I am visiting from NZ in 6 weeks. Thanks all.

Driscoll Report 26 Apr 2012 03:19

Thank you everyone. Pam that was right for Thomas too but not sure what happened after he had two children with Susan, Thomas and Mary A.

I have just received a copy of Ann Driscoll's birth and it CONFIRMS that her parents were John D and Catherine Neale (O'Neill - Castlehaven records) and that they lived in 11 Hanover St, Rotherhithe. She was born in 1868 not 67. So, I can now trace her to Rineen with her family! Excellent!

Now, this gene stuff, being so addictive, has me wanting to know more. So after a break I shall be hunting the kin of John Driscoll and Catherine O'Neill of Rineen.
And still tracing forwards on the other children too. I think I have a lot of them covered and have tracked Jame's people up until the living ones. Would love to hear from them.

Thanks all! :-D

Looking to see if I can confirm John and his wife Catherine's parents? Births in Rineen match, but there are two or more Driscoll/Neil John and Catherine combination around the Union Hall, Kilmacabea and Rineen area. Also other Neil's living in Rineen. Keen to try and sort out the relationships to clarify my kin. I think they must have left Ireland after the birth of their 6th child, then had 4 in Rotherhithe, UK.

Driscoll Report 20 Apr 2012 09:42

Need help with Neil of Rineen, Castlehaven. Does Catherine have relations in Rineen or surrounding area? Does John come from same area or possibly Kinsale? Eldest son, Thomas may have been born in Kinsale in 1856. Next 5 children from Rineen, others - not entirely sure about Anne, but Laura, Bridget and Margaret in Rotherhithe, London. Would like to track this family further to ascertain Johns birthplace.....if possible. Thank you very much.

Dear Driscoll, regarding your query about grandparents being Godparents, my parents were my daughters Godparents. Any person over the age of 12 years once they have recieved their Confirmation can be sponsers for children being Baptisted in the Republic of Ireland.

Driscoll Report 15 Apr 2012 21:25

Is anyone able to locate the birth of Anne? Annie on death cert - Bermondsey 1937. The 1871 census has her as born in Cork, the 1881 onwards has her in Rotherhithe. It could be that the parents/census takers made a mistake - but maybe she was born in Ireland and Rotherhithe has become a 'fact'.

I also see a number of Neil's from Rineen. James and Florance. Can anything be dug up about this family. I am wondering if they are Catherine's brothers. One also has a Thomas born abt 1865 so I am wondering if that is a family name, possibly a father?

Is there an issue with the Castlehaven records? Were they lost before a certain time?
