Tidbits about William Luscombe ...............
he was obviously a "big" man in local politics, etc
He was a J.P .......... Justice of the Peace
Vice-Consul (or possibly even Consul) in Plymouth for the Netherlands.
A William Luscombe was Mayor of Plymouth in 1869-1870, and laid the corner stone for the new Town Hall. Was this the same one who married Sarah???
Is this the same WL who was involved in a number of companies, for example ...............
"Outside of Sutton Harbour was the Queen Anne Shipwrights' Yard at Queen Anne's Battery. This was run by the Banks family.
.... early in May 1865 a prospectus was published inviting investors to take shares in The Plymouth Ship Building, Dock, and Iron Works Company Limited. The Company had been formed to take over the Queen Anne Ship Yard, which was to be run by Mr Joseph Banks. . .
The prospectus stated that there were at the time no iron ship building works in Plymouth. The local directors of the Company were Mr William Luscombe JP, of Messrs Luscombe, Sons, and Company, and chairman of the Sutton Harbour Company; Mr Francis Hicks, of Messrs Hicks and Company, and a director of the Great Western Dock Company; Mr James Peake, late Constructor of Her Majesty's Dockyard at Saltash, Cornwall (this probably means that he lived at Saltash); and Mr John Treeby, of Messrs Treeby and Company, consul for Belgium and Italy, amongst other countries."
