- and Edith Aline Booth(e)'s absence in 1881, when she was about 16 - finishing school in Europe?

I stumbled across this diary via Google - it is about the right era and mentions finishing school. It is an eye-opener on corsetry!

I think that I'm just going to have to go with the wonderfully romantic suggestion that the sisters were having a shopping trip to buy Ethel's trousseau in Paris - what fun they must have had.

PS: They were married by licence at the Register Office. Ethel's papa, as you all know, was the deceased Rector of Chorlton-cum-Hardy and the groom's papa was John Harvey Boteler, a Captain in the Royal Navy, deceased.

So no fathers to give the bride away and Ethel's only brother Arthur was off serving King and country in the Army. I think that possibly this marriage may have been rather frowned upon because of the groom's divorced status and that is why we see no family members acting as witnesses.

With such wealth, blighted romance and possible trips to Paris, I want a connection with this family. Did Ethel Marion get married in the Register Office in Paddington? If so, I am in good company as that is where I got married but I made the frock myself.

Yes, she was married in the Register Office at Paddington. Methinx her frock may have come from gay Paree, though!
