Can anyone tell me if there is a way of looking up an address to find out who lived there in 1908 it could be the break through to finding my grandfathers parents.
I would be grateful for any help as I dont know where else to look.
The address is 18 Northampton Street, Islington
Thanks. :-D

Have you checked the 1911 census to see where your grandfather was recorded?

I presume that you have a copy of his birth certificate. Does that not give details of his parents?

Hi,
Have you tried the electoral registers?

If you post the details you have so far, , someone maybe able to help you to search.

Louise

Louise Report 8 Mar 2012 11:48

Thanks Jonesey and Christina but the Census dont help as the 1901 Census is too early and the 1911 is too late. They moved around a lot.
I have already checked the census and the electrol registers.
The electrol register is a little hard to check as I need to look up the address as I dont have a name and as I am from Australia I dont know the areas so I dont know where to look and there are hundreds and hundreds of pages.

ChristinaS Report 8 Mar 2012 12:02

Although on the 1901 and 1911 censuses there are several, unrelated, people living at 18, Northampton Street - the only person who shows up on the 1908 electoral roll for that address is Henry Prince.

Somehow, this has been mis-transcribed on Ancestry. But if you search for Leonard Lewis Dewberry for 1908 in Islington, you can scroll down the page to no.18

Very few people were eligible to vote in 1908, so the chances of finding relevant info are not good.

Presumably, the address is the one at which his birth was registered?

Who was his mother?

Who registered the birth?

Louise Report 8 Mar 2012 13:07

Thanks Christina is it on the same page as I am a paid member but not the highest paid so I cant look up electrol page I would have to pay as I go so I just want to make sure I wont have to go through lots of pages.

Louise Report 8 Mar 2012 13:12

Reggie no it is not the address of where he was born it is the address of an Aunty.
The name on his birth certificate is Lily Gay but we think it is a made up name. The surname is correct but dont think the first name is.

ChristinaS Report 8 Mar 2012 13:21

Hi Louise,

Yes it's on the same page, but it doesn't give any information other than his name. Henry Prince can also be found, living at the same address on the 1901 census. ( Henry Prince b.1849 Mile End)

On the 1891 census he's with his wife with 3 childre Mary A. b.1872, Louisa M b.1877 and Marion b.1880. But on the 1911 they claim to have had no children together.

There could have been others living at No.18 Northampton Street in 1908 who just weren't on the electoral rolls.

Women certainly didn't have the right to vote in 1908, so the aunt will not be recorded, wherever she lived.

How was the aunt connected to the child?

What was her name?

Did the child's mother register his birth?

ChristinaS

ChristinaS Report 8 Mar 2012 13:55

Hi Louise,

Was your grandfather born in Australia?

It must be in the middle of the night there by now! So I'll check back later to see if we can find the aunt somewhere else.

Louise

Louise Report 8 Mar 2012 20:52

Sorry Reggie I understand that about the woman voting I should of really said Uncle as the Aunt had died by then.
This is really hard to explain but we think my grandfather was adopted, he was brought up by Edith Louisa Gay nee Cleak and Frank Henry Gay.
I have records from his birth as the mother was only 16 at the birth of my grandfather. The records say that one Aunt brought her to the place he was born and another Aunty took the baby to give her a second chance and on the record it gives both Auntys address hence me looking to see who lived at that address. I have found the other address but cant find this one.
I am thinking that the mother may have been Edith's sisters childs as her mother (the aunt) had died. Her name was Ivy Elsie Emily Edith Cooper.
I know this is very confusing.
Thanks anyway for your help.

Christina no my Grandfather was born in England he died in Australia though.
Thanks for your help.

No. 188
25/11/1908
Maternity Hospital
271 Mare Street (could be Marie not sure)
Hackney
Frank Edwin Cecil
Boy
No Fathers name
Mother Lily Gay (Mothers Help) dont know what that means
61 Chealton Road Fulham ( that is how the street name is spelt on the cert, I know it is spelt a little different from that)
informant Lily Gay mother
Maternity Hosptial and address of hospital again.
Registered 11/12/1908
CHayner Registrar.

My grandfather was know to us as Edward Francis (Frank) Gay so they must of changed his name.
He was never able to find his certificate when he was alive and probably for that reason.
Thanks Reggie

Could he not be Edith the daughters child?

If he had the surname Gay and was an aunts child, surely it would be one of Franks sisters? not that I can see one who was young.

Where have you found out the age of the mother being 16?

Louise

Louise Report 9 Mar 2012 07:27

That is another possibility we had thought of that Edith's daughter was his mother but she would of been older than 16.
I have the notes from the home my grandfather was born that tells you her age.
Frank didn't have any sisters young enough your right.
This has been kept a secret from the family even Edward my Grandfather. Since doing my family history and making contact with distant relatives they all seem to know something about my grandfather being adopted.
It is all so frustrating and I will probably never find out but I am not going to give up.

Is this the 'aunt'?

I can't see a death to match the birth info

Louise

Louise Report 9 Mar 2012 10:30

Ivy (the one you have in message above) is who I am thinking can be a possibility for the mother, her mother was Emily Cooper nee Cleak sister of Edith Louisa Gay nee Cleak and sister of Annie C Brazier nee Cleak.
Ivy married years later to John Handford so when she died she was Ivy Handford she was only in her 20's when she died.
