It seems GR staff don't even know what's on their own site

Mr Moir needs a crash course in how to post a request

From GR's earlier post

. There will be 8 other laptops available and all the records are free to view on the day, so it will be unlikely you will be asked to do basic look-ups. The posts are most likely to be calling on your expertise of the records and general family history knowledge.

Are GR only allowing people to look at GR's site?

No response to Tracey's queries, pity that.

"The posts are most likely to be calling on your expertise of the records and general family history knowledge.

- re the latter, possibly in order to promote the site.

I thought Mr Moir was going to ensure that all necessary info was included in requests he put on the boards.........

Not if the following is an example!

I have a couple of sisters here, Barbara and Beryl Thackwell, who have a letter from the Salvation Army indicating that their putative grand father was Thomas Arnold of 7 Belgrave Street. They would like to prove that he was their grand father and are considering simple DNA family match test. We are looking for possible descendants who would be willing to help.

BTW.......there are no births on freebmd for the names of the ladies in question

"have a letter from the Salvation Army indicating that their putative grand father was Thomas Arnold of 7 Belgrave Street. They would like to prove that he was their grand father "

- what cause do they have to disbelieve The Salvation Army's research?

Is there anyone from GR on their stand who has even the slightest experience of doing FH research?

This was my fear....

They are business people, background people...not fully fledged users of this site. GR staff are not grass roots researchers... they are proving this right now.

They would have been better to offer people, like those here, a years free subs in return for some time on the stand actually promoting the site rather than proving it's failings??

That's why i suggetsed a discussion forum/email approach. Just because they built the site (sorry bought it and maintain it) doesn't mean they know what they are doing!!!

Well i got mocked for my opinions....

But people, what GR are offering is a only demonstration of how interested parties can post inquiries on their site and get helpful responses, not a full blown history of who they are looking for. It is just a taster to reel in new PAID members - nothing wrong with that as they are a business not a cosy chit-chatty set up or local family history society.

The idea is for visitors to GRs stand to post a message then when they get home to look at any responses and think 'wow' I must join up and see what further help I can get.

I think it's great that some have given their time to help if that is want they enjoy doing but remember that the poster still has to join up to respond.
