Transcript from letter:
I think Grandfather was alive when I was born in 1914. He was William Pickering who was married twice. I know he had a son Henry who had 4 sons, and a daughter Amelia, who had a daughter with his 1st wife. With his 2nd wife he had a son Frank (Dad) and a daughter who went to Canada during the depression.

2nd letter:
Now Dad said when he was a lad he had to go to Coalville or Ashby for buttons and cottons etc as his sister was a dressmaker, so she must have been a bit older than him. So perhaps that accounts for 2 sisters. A relative remembers one called Kate, so I wonder if she was the one that went to Canada. She was Dads real sister because they wrote to each other once a year, but the last he heard was 1945 when she sent a photo of her and her husband, but she didnt give a name.

So this relative who wrote the letter didnt know of Williams wife No3 Fanny.

Linda, apart from Edith, Fanny had other daughters (from earlier census) who would also be Frank's step-sisters. It could be any one of them.

Let us know when you've been able to assimilate what is in the letter, bearing in mind that it may not be 100% accurate.

So it could be step sister Edith then that went to Canada?
The other sister Amelia listed in 1881 is from Williams previous wife, she died in childbirth, thats why he had to marry quickly poor Harriet, to look after his other kids!

Although your experience may be different, many families make no distinction amongst full sisters, half-sisters, step-sisters and adopted sisters.

No definately says Frank(MY Grandfather) sister, this was written by Franks daughter. I will re-read the rest of them, to see if I can gather any more info.

Hi Linda - not seeing anything immediately obvious for Mary Elizabeth.

The depression was (as previously mentioned) the late 1920s until around just before the second world war. If she DID go to Canada then she would have been around 50? She may have been married by that time so travelled under a different name.

I'm afraid info from family members can sometimes be a bit distorted. Is there a chance that it may have been a daughter of one of the siblings who went?

Following the fantastic solving skills of people on here, I have a look up request. Mary Elizabeth Pickering Born 1878 Leicester, went to Canada during 'The depression' Can she be found on a passenger list, without me paying for pay per view credits?

I think you are all correct. I have re read the letter by relative, that said Grandad Franks sister Kate went to Canada in depression, but he had 2 sisters. So I now assume Kate stayed in Uk, married Sam, and Franks other sister Mary Elizabeth born 1878 went to Canada? Thanks for all fantastic help people, much appreciated.

I have to say I think Maureen in NY is right and that Kate married Sam Bonser in 1903.

Cant find a printed record for her, must be on comp somewhere, but from memory she was in Notts area in 1901

Yes, she is living with family 1891, her mum Harriet dies in 1896, William remarries. I will have to trawl through my book to find Kate in 1901......

Perhaps my Kate didnt go in 1909 then? It was a few years ago I found that record, will have to start again on passenger ship records.
I have a hand written letter from elderly relative dated 1995 which says " She went to Canada in the depression"

Where is she in 1901,not with parents.
William her dad had remarried.

Well the Kitty who got off the boat in 1909 was going to Winnipeg.

Since she has the exact same ticket number (7498) as the K Pickering who got on the boat I would say they are the same person. She's 22. I have no reason to doubt whoever submitted the correction/addition for her name.
