A rather large report of the wedding of Alice Louisa Ewing Gordon and Richard E P Martyn ( which as a one fingered typist would take me all day)
The Royal Cornwall Gazette Falmouth Packet, Cornish Weekly News, & General Advertiser (Truro, England), Thursday, May 17, 1894; pg. 6;
At Carthew St Austell on Thursday among the guests the Rev C T Ward brother in law
Mr.Martyn had been residing at Sherbourne that he might study farming and gain the necessary qualifications for being a leader in the neighbourhood

he Martyn Family were the owners of the Carthew Estate on which the Wheal Martyn pit was established. The family led by Elias Martyn started several clay works in the area. In the 1840s he expanded Carthew House and moved his family up from St. Austell to live there. The house was demolished in the late 1960s but the leaded glass window was saved and is on display here.
---
The Gomm works were leased by the Martin Brothers from the Mount Edgecumbe Estate in about 1878, and were worked until about the 1920s. The buildings now form the main entrance to the museum, the shop and the coffee shop.
Wheal Martyn China Clay works began working much earlier, in the 1820s. They were started by Elias Martyn on the Carthew Estate, bought by his father Richard in 1790. Elias became one of the major clay producers in Cornwall. In the 1840s he operated five pits and by 1869 was producing 2000 tons of clay a year at Wheal Martyn. After Elias' death in 1872 the family kept the land at Carthew, but his son Richard Uriah Martyn closed down or leased the works to other operators.
In 1880 John Lovering took on the lease at Wheal Martyn......
And that’s about it in the guide book. Though Wheal Martyn has quite an extensive archive which may be worth consulting
could be worth getting in touch to see if they have any family papers

St. Austell - Death of Mr. R.U. MARTYN, of St. Austell - Great regret was felt in St. Austell yesterday (Sunday) morning when it became known that Mr. Richard Uriah Martyn, of Clynton, St. Austell, and Fowey, had died during the previous night. Mr. Martyn, who was to all appearance a robust man, had been ailing only about a week; and only on the 19th instant attended a meeting in the Town-hall to promote a local scheme in commemoration of the Queen's jubilee. It appears that a few days ago he received a slight injury to his foot, but not of such a nature as to cause alarm to his friends or medical attendant. Inflammation, however, set in; and soon after one o'clock on Sunday morning Mr. Martyn passed away. The deceased gentleman was the son of the late Elias Martyn, of Carthew House, and for many years carried on a successful business in the china clay trade, under the name of Elias Martyn and Sons. Originally the Martyns were Wesleyans, but of late years they have attended the services of the Church of England. Although unsuccessful at the last election of churchwardens, the deceased gentleman some years since filled that office with great credit. In politics Mr. Martyn was an ardent Conservative, and only recently made great efforts to establish a Conservative club in the town. He took great interest in all objects for the benefit of the town, and was the promoter of the Carthew Institute and Reading-rooms, and contributed handsomely to its funds. Mr. Martyn, who was about 60 years of age, was a Guardian of the poor at the time of his death. As an economist, he will be greatly missed on the Board. Mr. Martyn leaves a widow and one son and a daughter.

I saw that tree, but did not post it, because they so obviously have the mother wrong
Ann Matilda Pearce was the mother of the children
Elizabeth does not seem to ever have had any children.

Even more complicated!
There are now 3 wives: 1. Elizabeth Bederby, 1820-1894, married 1855 2. Ann Matilda Pearce, 1829-1902, married 1857 3. Elizabeth Bessmeres, nee Ewings, 1824- ,married 1878
All the children appear to be from Ann Matilda Pearce, judging from the names. But the birth date of Joseph is before the marriage!
With their money and position, could such a scandal be covered?

I don't think it was so much of a scandal in those days.
Children born (or conceived) out of wedlock was not unusual

I did not notice the date of that marriage!
I just noticed wrong mother!
and children born or conceived outside marriage was far from unusual, as Mike says.
It proved that the woman was fecund .................. so farmers etc liked it because there would be children born to support them in old age.
Even the wealthy had many "premature" babies.
OH's gt gt grandmother married in December 1831, and gave birth in May 1832 ................... a descendent of one of her siblings, told me that that was NOT unusual in that community or time ............ many of her ancestors had the midwife waiting at the door of the church "just in case".
These were wealthy farmers and millers.

Elizabeth Bederby apparently ONLY appears in that family tree.
and if you investigate it further ..................
They have her living in Lancashire in 1851, born in Exeter, Devon, married to a Richard Martyn, also born in Exeter:-
Name Age Richard Martyn 33 b.ca 1818, Exeter, Tea Agent Elizabeth Martyn 30 b.ca 1821, Exeter, Devon Claria Martyn 9 b.ca 1842, Exeter Jane Martyn 5 b.ca 1845, Exeter Christiana Martyn 2 b,ca 1849, Exeter
Address:- 10 Ann Street, Everton, Lancashire
THEN the tree shows her marrying Richard Uriah Martyn in 1855
But I've found her with Richard Martyn born Exeter on the 1861 Census
1861 Census
Name: Richard Martyn Age: 43 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1818 Relation: Head Spouse's Name: Elizth Martyn Gender: Male Where born: Exeter, Devon, England Civil parish: West Derby Ecclesiastical parish: Fairfield County/Island: Lancashire Country: England Registration district: West Derby Sub-registration district: West Derby
Richard Martyn 43 Elizth Martyn 42 Christian Martyn 12 Emma Martyn 9 Ezekiel Martyn 6 Henry Davies 40 Mary Williams 34 Abel Hughes 21 Edwin Williams 2
In other words .................. a typical example of a right royal mess, so often found on ancestry Trees
John .................
IGNORE THE ELIZABETH BEDERBY ........ SHE HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH YOUR RICHARD MARTYN!!!

Sylvia - thank you for putting an end to that wild goose chase
But it did introduce a new player: I had not seen Joseph Pearce Martyn (born 1856), apparently the eldest child of Richard Uriah Martyn, before. However, I cannot find any record of him, although I remember seeing somewhere, before he was of interest, a reference to a Joseph Martyn, born in Cornwall about 1856, being or dying in California - I did not take note of it at the time and cannot now remember the source.

I found this website:
LLANBADARN CHURCHYARD BY A W GILBEY AND PENGLAIS SCHOOL HISTORY SOCIETY
Memorial Dl17 Sacred to the memory of W. Besemeres, M.D., F .R.C.S., who died at Dole, near Aberystwyth, December 29th 1871. Also of Emily Ewings, (sister of E. Besemeres), who died at Dole June 27th, 1875.
Website Author Note: Dr William Besemeres was born in London and retired to live at Dole where he died at the age of 74. Emily Ewings was the sister of his wife Elizabeth who was staying with the family with another sister, Alice, in 1871.
So it seems Elizabeth had 2 sisters, unmarried, Alice and Emily (although Alice as sister is perhaps more assumed than proved). But who is the Emily who married William Negus?
