What does it all mean?!
Just when I thought I had it all figured out! :-S

I have Wm Hugh's birth cert; he was born at the Victoria Rd address (she died soon after he was born on 20th Jan) to David HUNTER, general labourer, and Sarah Elizabeth formerly BROWN (deceased).
Sarah Elizabeth Hunter Date of Burial 19th February 1880 Age 24 Abode Victoria Road Margate Parish Church Margate St John Parish Thanet
David's baptism: Name David Henry Brown Father's Name David Brown Mother's Name Eliza Brown Date of Baptism 7th October 1877 Parent's Occupation Private Soldier* Abode 181 High Street Margate Parish Church Margate St John Ceremony Performed By G J Everest Curate Parish Thanet
I also have the birth cert, which says mother Sarah Elizabeth Brown, domestic servant. Father not named. *On DHH jnr's 1900 marriage cert, his father's occupation is given as Private 15th Hussars HM Army.
Note this fits with his age on this census with father and stepmum: 1881 Census: David HUNTER Head M Male 28 Belfast, Ireland Painter Eliza HUNTER Wife M Female 21 Margate, Kent, England Painter Wife David H. HUNTER Son Male 3 Margate, Kent, England Eliza LUCKETT Boarder U Female 25 Margate, Kent, England General Servant -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Source Information: Dwelling 4 Mummery Bldgs. DHH snr and Eliza GILBERT married July 1880 as widower, aged 28, occ painter, father Hugh HUNTER, cabinetmaker. On the July 1878 marriage of Sarah Elizabeth BROWN, aged 22, to Wm David HUNTER, aged 26, his father is also shown as Hugh HUNTER, carpenter.

Wow, that's brilliant!
Yes Wm's mother died in 1880 and I guess he was farmed out, then both boys ended up in Isle of Thanet Workhouse in 1891 after DHH snr died in 1885.
I did not know about DHH jnr going to the US to visit his brother!!!
Hm that seems to put some doubt on the 2nd marriage to Margaret LOWE in 1911 then. Starting to wonder if there are 2 DHH's at work born Margate c1877-8!!! Surely not, had enough trouble finding the first one!
(To save you some work I have already found him born as Hy David BROWN; the David Hy HUNTER b. 1876 Woowlich died 1876; there was one born in Islington in 1877? But this could hardly be confused with Margate surely.)
Unless he and Margaret spilt up I guess - else why would he have an aunt as next of kin in the UK, and not his wife?!
Can you see him returning?

perhaps David Henry was visiting relatives back in the Thanet area?
death certificate might throw some light on it
the distance between Paddington (a district of London) and Thanet (towns of Ramsgate, Margate and Broadstairs in Kent) is about 65 - 70 miles
(I live in Broadstairs)

Well done, Choccy! That's brilliant. :-D
No sign of David Hy in the electoral reg? Seems odd he would have died in Thanet if this couple seem to have stayed in Paddington area. Though I have no idea how close they are to each other!

nudge for jax, Choccy & BatMansDaughter :-)
P.S. David is in hospital in 1911, no sign of Lily.
P.P.S. Looking at David Hy's remarriage to Margaret LOWE in 1911, I can't see any sign of them after that - no deaths? Possible birth in 1920 but that means the 1915 death for David is not him. And if it is, no remarriage found for Margaret, nor her death. So confused!
Is there an index that shows any additional info on deaths? David H HUNTER d. Thanet 1915, June qtr, 2a 1382
