I think what really threw was in Mary Kerr born Liverpool.
I just wish we could find the family in 1861 - possible on their way home from Scotland!

William McNeil and Lavinia had a daughter, Elizabeth, born 23 April 1861 and then they seem to disappear too!

Mary Elizabeth McNeil born at 5.30pm on January third 1861 at Elrig Village, Parish of Mochrum. Father Andrew McNeil, Joiner (Journeyman) mother Mary McNeil ms Kerr married 26th November 1853 at Liverpool. The informant was Andrew McNeil, father (present). The birth was registered on 7th January 1861 at Mochrum.

1861 SRI Birth MCNEIL, MARY ELIZABETH (Statutory Births District number 892/00 Entry Number 0002)

Moira, this best way to confirm this would be to get Mary Elizabeth's birth registration from scotlandspeople. Scottish birth certs give date and place of parents' marriage.

Images of all the other baptisms and marriages should also be on scotlandspeople and you may be able to go back further on there.

The red herring was John being a tailor in Liverpool?

In the passing Potty some of my ancestors (Fulton, Wood, Woods, Litterick and McCormick) came from Kirkinner and Mochrum.

1851 gives John's birthplace as Kirkinner, so a possible birth and marriage

I also found this Mary Kerr from the same area working in Liverpool.

Though on first inspection her father could well have been 'Mon tgomery' so I sort of discounted it.
