new query re my post 4/3

Help please in finding the birth details of the above. I have found his baptismal record for 25/6/1848 at St peter's in Liverpool. Also found him on 1851 census. parents James and Bridget Usher.
I want to order his Birth certificate but need the reference number,
Also the birth of his brother James Usher born 1851 shows the volume No as XX (is this right).

Thanks Olwen
:-)

Hi Olwen, where have you searched for the birth records?

There is no "xx" on the FreeBMD record:

Not seeing an obvious registration, but as there was no pressure on parents to register births until about 1874 many were not registered.

Maybe James and Bridget married in Ireland.

I would get brother James' birth cert to check out Bridget's maiden name.

It was this site that I checked for the birth details for James Usher !! Thanks for the correct volume number. This is the right census for Francis Usher. I just thought it was strange that they registered James but not Francis.

Would either of these birth certificates show their mother's maiden name.

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 22 Dec 2011 21:18

Olwyn, the birth certificate certainly should show maiden name (and former, if any)

I would always check FreeBMD for records http://www.freebmd.org.uk

I'd hazard a guess that the reason they mightn't have registered Francis is because he was illegitimate, whereas James wasn't - that's if the marriage Mike posted above was correct.

Thanks for this. Will order the birth certificate for James Usher.
I think that James and Bridget were married in Ireland, As they first appear in the 1851 census and they already had a daughter born in Ireland in 1842.

Wish you had said that the parents probably married in Ireland.
Would have saved a lot of speculation.

Ignore the marriage I posted earlier in that case.

Mike - very sorry.

just as a matter of interest - on some versions of the birth index the volume number was written in roman numerals eg vol 20 written as XX and which I think is translated by freebmd

edit

just checked the image - the image says XX but when displaying the item freebmd translates it to 20

Now looking for his sister Mary Usher born Down Ireland around 1942-1944. I have got her in the 51 and 61 census living in Liverpool with her parents and then not sure what happened to her.

I have now found on family search a marriage between a Mary Usher (1844) with the parents James and Bridget. Married on 6/1/1865 in Boston Massachusetts to a Frederick Fosselman.

Could anyone kindly look up to see if a Mary Usher emigrated between the years 1861-1864.

Many thanks Olwen

Can't find a reliable shipping record and can't find the Fosselmans on US census (that would have confirmed wife's birthplace).

Might Mary have gone back to Ireland?
