Yes thanks Mel. I have loads on the Patties. This is not my direct line - Young was a brother of William 1792. It's obviously a very common name in Scotland and Fife in particular probably because they all seemed to breed like the proverbial rabbits. All have them have loads of children - except my great great grandparents who only had my great grandmother (which is what started off this thread)! I will see what the death certificate I have been promised yields and then maybe take a view as to whether to purchase William 1842's marriage certificate to see if it names a father.

I have been in touch with a very established "Pattie" contact and he is sending me William's death certificate which shows his mother's name as Harley.

So definitely the son of of Isabella 1817 and the grandson of Isabella 1792. Doesn't prove who his father was though.

But Isabella 1817 is not a Simpson she's the Pattie (daughter of William Pattie and Isabella Simpson who is the 1892)...so his father is maybe John Harley or persons unknown!!

William is still down as grandson of Isabella 1792. Isabella 1817 seems to be his mother. Perhaps his father is an entirely different Mr Simpson who shall remain unknown. Simpson is possibly William's middle name as well.

Yes I found them - I did update the post to say I must have been brain-dead this morning!

So two options...

William 1842 is the son of Isabella (1817) and she is not yet married..or the entry on 1851 census showing him as grandson is wrong and he is the son of William and Isabella (1794)

There is an OPR death for Henry Harley in Ferry Port On Craig on the 20th Sept 1849. This is on scotlandspeople.

Yes Alviegal I found this. But it shows William and Isabella as his parents - not grandparents as the census says.This is what I think...

This is the daughter of William and Isabella. I have her in my tree as married to John Harley 1822 to 1851 (which fits with her being a widow).

But I can't find a marriage.

I have children Isabella Harley 1845 (fits with Isabella aged 6 in the census) and Henry Harley 1848 - 1851 (which fits with him not being there).

But I can't find their births or Henry's death.

I have searched under Harley and Pattie.

Isabella (1845) married John Mcclaren in December 1868 but I have no proof of this marriage.

So were they ever Harley's or did Isabella (1817) not actually marry which would explain why she is reverted to Pattie in 1851. Or was it an error?

Yes I'd seen that birth. I kind of wondered but decided as Elizabeth's birth shows both parents that this may not be same William. Pattie is an extremely common name in Scotland (none more so than my ancestors bred like rabbits!!

Just to say a thank you to the GR community (again). I have a lot of this information - more than I realised because I have obviously not updated my GR tree with information in my Ancestry tree (memo to self - bad girl!!). But there are a few things I didn't have and it seems that my research is fairly sound (having been confirmed by these posts) especially in the seemingly odd fact that my great grandmother was indeed an only child!
