Updated - Birth for William 1842 showing William and Isabella as his parents - not grandparents as the censuses 1851 and 1861 show.

Now established through someone who has his death certificate that he was indeed the grandson. Mother Isabella Harley (presumably before she married). Now to establish father :-)

Yes her birth clearly shows up on LDS with both parents. But her's is the only one. There is a William, with father William but no mother listed. But Pattie is a prettry common name and the fact that Isabella is not shown as mother leads me to think that there was only Elizabeth.

It would be nice to find the missing censuses (even in summary)

You know if he was at sea for most of his life perhaps Elizabeth was an only child.

1861 census is definitely him. I had thought that maybe it would explain why Elizabeth was an only child.

I don't think the William Peattie in 1841 is him. Parents were William and Isabella (Simpson).

George was (I think) his twin and yes - confusingly - he married an Isabella too (and even more confusingly her name was Simpson too!)

Unfortunately my Scottish lines have names like Pattie, Simpson Henderson and Irvine which are the equivelent of Smith and Jones methinks!

Alviegal...looks quite promising.

Parents are correct and he had sisters Isabella (1817) and Janet (1830) and brother Robert (1832) - so they all fit. I don't have a Margaret

George isn't right though - I have George same age as William - they were christened the same day anyway in November 1821

Yes that looks good. I have just cross checked with my Ancestry tree and I have him as 1826 on there...so looks as if it is an error in my GR tree. So yes - seems this is definitely them in 1841.

There was another Margaret Buist born about the same time. So as not to confuse the two. Seemingly she died in 1844.

Yes Buist is another family surname (Margaret Buist married Walter pattie, William's grandfather.

And they all use the same batch of names so I have endless Williams, Margarets Johns Janets etc etc etc :-)
