Joanne, remember that statutory registration didn't begin in Scotland until 1855. Scottish registrations do give more information than the English ones. Bith certificates from. I think 1860 give the date and place of the parents marriage. Marriage certificates give the names of both parents including the mothers' maiden surnames and death certificates name both parents again including the mother's maiden surname and all spouses of the deceased if the informant knew the details.
