Hi, I am looking for information about Fred, Rowland and Olive Addison. Their sister Amy was my grandmother. They lived in Lancashire and Fred went into the church. Rowland emigrated to Canada in about 1910 but I don't know what happened to Olive. If this is your family too, please get in touch!
Thanks, Christine

Thanks for the response. This is definitely the family. I have a little more information about Fred in that he was a vicar in Manchester until at least 1942. I think he may have died in Manchester in 1965, but again, he could have died in 1941. I'm still investigating this.
I had a feeling Olive had died sometime between the 1901 and 1911 census, so these details may be correct.
As for Rowland, the info you've given is great. I knew he'd married, but not when and to whom. I do know that he was a customs officer in Canada ( Toronto, I think). The family all seemed to lose touch round about then. My father was an only child, so it would be great to learn if I have cousins in Canada.
Thank you! :-D

Canadian BMD are notoriously difficult to search because of their privacy laws.
On the off chance that any son was also named Rowland, I did a search on whitepages.ca - but there are 21 R Addison's in the results!

It's possible that Rowland might have named a son after him, but my father ( his nephew) was named Rowland also ( born in 1921), so I assume he may have wanted to avoid it!
It certainly does seem difficult to obtain Canadian information - some sites promise a lot, but deliver little. I am very new to this game, but am learning fast!
I really only wanted to find out about great-uncle Fred, because my late father always wanted to know if the long-held family belief that he had risen to the heights of bishop was true. I realise now that it probably wasn't, but Rowland is starting to seem a lot more interesting.

Take the AG link - the 1911 switch is at top right. I don't see your guy in 1911 - maybe he stayed in the US for a year or more. (He was in Canada for the US 1910 census). So lets try Muriel Ward - split view gets her 1911 image. Her addy is Lot 20 Concession III=3. The Links link at extreme right of her transcription initiates a search of 1901. Click on the fresh window, and again use the split view link to get a saveable image. Here's the 1901 transcription:
1901 Census of Canada Page Information District: ON CARDWELL (#51) Subdistrict: Adjala A-4 Page 7 1 53 Ward Robert J M Head M Apr 28 1861 39 2 53 Ward Elizebeth A F Wife M Dec 3 1871 29 3 53 Ward Ida May F Daughter S Apr 3 1891 10 4 53 Ward Murial D F Daughter S Feb 7 1898 3 5 53 Bronze? Do a geographic look up via the 1901 LAC link for district #=51, subd#=a 4, and guess page 2 on Sched 2. http://data2.collectionscanada.gc.ca/1901/z/z002/z000055064.pdf We're interested in the house info for Page 7 Line 1. I can't make out the farm addy - looks like East L 27 & 3 Con, South E L 26 & 3
Look up at http://maps.google.com/ for Adjala 20 Sideroad, Rosemont, Ontario, Canada. Click on the satellite view if necessary. Head E on Adjala 20 Sideroad - between Concession Rds 3 & 4, there's 2 farms to the S of you. One of these would likely be the Wards' 1911 farm.
One can find concession maps at http://digital.library.mcgill.ca/countyatlas/SearchMapframes.php in particular (under Simcoe) http://digital.library.mcgill.ca/countyatlas/images/maps/townshipmaps/sim-m-adjala.jpg
Although it's nothing to do with your mob, the Nottawasaga R flows N and empties into L Huron at Wasaga Beach. During the war of 1812, the schooner Nancy was being used to supply Fort Michilimackinac which controls the strait between L Huron & L Michigan. As soon as they heard they were at war, the Brits rushed 700 men up there, had the fort under siege and the local residents captured as hostages before the local US commander knew they were at war. He surrendered, fearful of a massacre of the civilians by Britain's indian allies. The Brits then rushed most of the men back before the US knew they'd been missing. Anyways, back to the Nancy. The Brits lost control of L Huron, and eventually the Nancy was trapped a couple of miles upstream in the Nottawasaga, so it was scuttled. Supply thereafter was by canoe - abt a 600km round trip. The wreck silted up and formed an island in the river. The wreck was rediscovered 80+ y back, and now forms a museum. You cross over on a little footbridge, and the descend into the ship - it's rather neat.
Ontario births are closed for 100 y so you're not likely to learn of kids unless you come across an obit for him or Muriel.

Name: ADDISON, ROWLAND Regimental number(s): 10095 Reference: RG 150, Accession 1992-93/166, Box 43 - 36
... however ! ... his is one of the unusual cases where his attestation papers are not accessible on line ... which can indicate that he had problems during his military service ...
he did not die in WWI as we know
and the Canadian Legion does not have any record of his death unfortunately

I think maybe mgnv can advise how to apply for his military records if you are interested ?

the only possible reference I find to a Norman Addison in Canadian pages on the internet is
http://www.canada411.ca/res/5195962477/Norman-Addison/134778579.html
if you click on the photo there you see a larger version
"AJAX -- Norman Addison rakes his leaves on Kings Avenue over the weekend. Nov. 10, 2007"
a picture of someone probably too young to be Harold's brother :-)
Ajax is near Toronto
there is also this search result but the link itself ( and even the cached version ) does not give the information shown
http://www.lifenews.ca/thespec/profile/5367--addison-jean-passed-away-at-carpenter-h Jean was the beloved wife of the late Norman Addison and loved mother of Kevin (Cinda) and Scott, (Alexandra). She will be lovingly remembered by two ...
but it does say Location: North Bay
-edit- some more googling found a place called Carpenter Hospice in Ontario so when I searched for that with the name Addison it got more details from the above search result: ADDISON, Jean Passed away at Carpenter Hospice, Burlington, Ontario, Friday, December 14, 2007 at the age of 77. Jean was the beloved wife of the late... http://www.thecarpenterhospice.com/
here is a link to contact details for one of the children in case that Norman Addison is the right person, I think there would be a good chance that it is
http://www.canada411.ca/res/7054721082/Kevin-Cinda-Addison/137683247.html
and an email address for his wife
http://www.cepp.org/AAC%20Rounds/I0024A56C
and a photo of the Addisons of North Bay :-)

chrissiex's first URL is the CEF search screen - take the "Search Help" link on left to learn how to apply for his service record.
For post WW1 service records, you can also drill down at: http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/genealogy/index-e.html
There are no access restrictions on service records of those who died 20+ y ago. If they died in service, no proof of death is needed.
PS chrissiex - impressive work there.
