Even more annoyingly I now can't find the Bamfields in 1861 (tried Banfield/Barnfield/Bamfield) - why is the 1861 census always such a problem on this site? It must have a huge number of mis-transcriptions or missing links! Grrrr! :-(

Linda Report 16 Aug 2011 17:43

Thanks Joy - I will contact the OPC.

It appears that there were a John Hawke and a John Hawkey, both blacksmiths living in St Columb Minor at the same time - how confusing can you get???

Yes, I'd got Richard Bolitho Hawkey and Thomasine Johns from someone else, and Richard's surname comes from his unmarried mother Mary Hawkey. I'm guessing a Mr Bolitho was the father!

I did find Richard Bolitho Hawkey in 1861 with his married daughter Elizabeth Bamfield/Banfield (born 1805) and her husband Richard born c1799 at 36 Fore Street, Tregony, Cornwall. Annoyingly I don't seem to have saved a copy so will have to find it again!

The William Hawkey who was a tailor's apprentice in 1841 is William Edward Hawkey, the great grandfather of my cousin; he became a master tailor having moved to London.

Thanks everyone!
cheers, Linda

There is a public tree on Ancestry which has JCH's parents as
Richad B Hawkey 1769 -1863 and Thomasine Johns 1778-1843

GillianMac

GillianMac Report 16 Aug 2011 13:03

The John Hawke posted in the 1861census appears in 1871 with the same grandson Henry now 15 but a different wife Winifred -he is Smith and lodging-house keeper.
So since JCH -(the right one )appears with Patience his new wife in 1871, I still think John Hawke can be disregarded

Nicky, my reason for discounting the 1861 was that the OPRs showed only 2 marriages for John Carpenter Hawkey -the first to Elizabeth ended when she died 1868 and he married Patience 1869.I did wonder about the "Rowe lady and her child but it is a common name there and she is not stated to-be a relative
But I could be wrong!

Gilllian..If you`ve ruled out the 1851 I posted because of daughter Christianna...what about the 1861 with wife Mary W???

People living with them with surname Rowe....{Elizabeths maiden name} so surely its the correct family?? Even if Elizabeths name got misheard and put down as Mary on the census, the age is completley out........

Elizabeth died in 1868 age 51, the wife Mary W is 35 years old in 1861.

Or is there another John Hawke/Hawkey who is also a blacksmith born c1812 in St Columb/ Colan { both come under the same registeration district.}

Will see if I can find him in 1841/1851.....

Right, the 1851 census with the Hawke family - Patience Hawke is John Carpenter Hawkey's 2nd wife!!! All very confusing! But also relevant! :-)

Elizabeth Rowe Hawkey baptised 21/12/1845 St Mawgan daughter of John and Elizabeth Rowe Hawkey -father Blacksmith, residence Trevarron
I have been through every page of the 1851 census on the OPC site for Mawgan and St Columb Minor and not found the family -suspect there are records missing
