Thank you very much Chris Ho, I rather suspected he may have been in the Hampshire Regiment. Are you saying he was from Hertford & the info I found on the 1911 census site Index said “POOLE CHARLES M 1877 34 Islington London. Birth Year 1875 Birth Year+/-2 years Marriage Year 1905 Birth Place IOW Head “ is wrong?
If Scrope & Eliza lost a child I would thought it would have been Charles, I did try to see if he was listed in the London Gazette casualties, but had problem on the site. Thank you again, Ann

Hi Chris Ho Thank you for looking for the 1911 census that was good of you, that confirms that it is not him, & that is a big help I wonder why when I looked at the index it came up with IOW?? I think my Charles must have died in South Africa, on his "Army Service Records, Attestation soldier number: 99"? would you know if that is his service number ? It is a bit short Thank you again Ann

Thank you very much Maureen you are a star, that is interesting,& to know his trade, I found his birth in Free BMD, looks like he may have had a sister.
I have also found Basil Willoughby Brennan, parents marriage 1912 William Brennan & Elsie Ella Rose Dunning Hackney London, is it possible for someone to look it up?
I couldn’t find any children of Basil & Jeanne Olive, all I know is what a gt aunt told me that was a “Yank“!, I wonder if he did ever live with his wife! I thought at first he may have died in the war, I didn’t find him in the CWGC [war graves ], now I know he died in 1968.
Thank you again Maureen. Ann

Thank you Maureen that is great that fits in nicely, Basil received his Royal Aero Club Aviators Certificate 1 Aug1939 he, then went to Canada on the 18 Aug 1939, returned to the UK on the, 23 Nov 1939 [now can you tell me what he was doing out there :-) ] and married Jeanne Olive Poole in Jun 1/41940 All Saints, Ryde Isle of Wight, I will have to get a copy, Ancestry has the marriage but I don’t know if they have a date?
You are right about the other one not being him, I wouldn’t want to be looking out for them either.
Thank again, Ann

Oh dear!!! I must be the slowest person ever. 1949!!!!!! (Sorry-ref to B Brennen)
Later in 1948, the Scythia was handed to the International Refugee Organisation to take refugees from Europe to Canada. In 1950 she became a passenger ship again, sailing from Britain to Canada and later to New York. Her final route was around the North Sea. In 1958 the Scythia was delivered to the shipbreakers at Inverkeithing by Captain Geoffrey Marr, her final commander.
Had to add that.

Thank you Maureen, that is interesting, so they were Refugees not students. I had a thought about Basil short stay, he possibly returned home to join up, as WW2 has started while he was away, he had just got his Aviators Certificate it may have been the RAF, I will try to look in to it. Ann

Hi Ann,
Just another "blurb" from me- no matter what I do I cannot find any record of the EMPRESS OF AUSTRALIA landing in Canada in Aug/Sept 1939. As you pointed out,WW2 -may have had an effect on the availability of passenger lists.
Best, Maureen
