Hi Vicci
I looked up Walter Peacock in 1911 and yes you are right he died.
Alice put most of her children in homes Gertrude and Kate Walters sisters were put in a convent in bath. But why she left Walter in Southampton only seem to tie up with the fact that she came to southampton to collect Walter weston medals. I dont think she was a caring mother I know my f in law hated her for dumping him as a child very sad.

I was at the special collections library in Southampton today so did some look ups for you but no luck . I looked in the Kelly's directories for 56 Lower Canal Walk but in 1919 there was no 56.
THe last reference I could find to this address was in 1905 when a John Elderfield lived there. 1906, 1907 and 1908 directories are missing but in 1909 there is no 56.
In 1912-1913 directory the only numbers in the fifties are 51 52 53 55 58 59. None for the war years but looked to 1924 and no 56. No one of these names in the street. I also looked at Canal Walk but nothing. Earliest electoral registers they hold are 1932
Lower Canal Walk was a very poor area of the city near the docks and known as The Ditches with shops opening out onto the street and people lodging in rooms above.

The other interesting point is how Alice was able to take possesion of the medals of Walter Weston, as they do not seem to have been married. Usually these would gone to next of kin, so maybe Walter made out a will in favour of Alice or his son.

Might be worth looking for the will of Walter Weston, possibly in Bath.

You might be able to fill in some gaps if they have records of your f-inlaw at the boys home in Southampton

I can't find James O'Brien b. 1901
or what happened to Dennis O'Brien b. 1908 (unless he is the one who diede in 1911 but there is another Dennis O'Brien of the same age belonging to another family)

Looking at this tio see if can find Peacock connection or maybe lving relatives who would know what happened t Alice

HI Angie

It would be worth going to the library in Southampton to look at the electoral rolls for 1919 to see who was at that address.

I checked the 1911 census and there is a Walter Peacock living in Southampton then, but he appears to have died in 1914 so he can't be the Wally Peacock that your f-inlaw lived with. However he did have a son Walter E Peacock (married Dorothy Hiett in Lyndhurst Hampshire 1913)
(PEACOCK, Walter Ernest Boarder Single M 22 1889 Shop Assistant Grocery Kent Catford )

ofcourse this family may have no connection at all.

Hi Vicci
I wonder if thats her death but the age is a little out . I have research all the Obrien family when alice was living with Patrick. Alice . Do you think If I sent for this certificate it would say if she was a widow on it? Alice Obriens las t known address was on the collection of 1914 star . It was 56 lower canal walk southampton.she signed her name A.M. Obrien peacock 21.may.1919. Its very strange that my f.i.law was brought up by wally peacock in southampton. Is there anywhere I can find out who was living with her at the address in 1919?
Angie thanks again for the war details

I don't know whether the 1911 census record is him, but it could be
if you look at his service record link above (if you subscribe to ancestry)

5.1.1910 transferred A' Res Sec? B
1.9.13 reengaged " "D"
6.1.14 transferred

Is your FinLaw was born may 1913 we can assume that Walter was in England sept/oct 1912

Vicci
If Walter was in the rifle brigade (the prince Consort) he must have been in england around 1911-12 because my fathetr i n law was born may 1913
so do you think that is why he was absent ?

the 1911 census for a "Weston" no first name given in India, the original census says "absent"

this could be him and looking at his military record it does not seem surprising that he was absent as he seems to have been AWOL or in detention several times.

Hi Vicci
I will tell you about my father in law he was Walter Weston Obrien. Now my father in law never knew his father and on his birth certificate it was father unknown .His mother was Alice Maude Obrien and she was a widow living in Great Corn Street Bath and next door was a Walter Weston who was was killed in 1914 . My father in law was born in 1913 and Alice collected Waltere Weston medals so therefore he had to be the father of Walter Weston Obrien my f.i.,law.. Thanks to all the help ive had from you guys now im just trying to find out about the Weston family ' Angie
