Probably a red herring but there is no sign of Annie in the census pre her marriage and I wonder if she was born Julia Ann Hughes with sister Emma Jane who was living with her in 1881 and described as a cousin.

Julia Ann disappears post 1871 and I can't see her in the census or find a marriage. If Emma Jane is her cousin then it would not be likely that their father's were both called Edward

Just a thought

Thanks all very much, yes Ginny Walter did marry Lizzie , after a long marriage to Emily (my Mum's "Granny Budd" in which Emily gave birth to 9 children, only two of whom survived.

I also found Emma Jane in the 1861 census with Walter's brother John, and it also says she was born in Derbyshire but that 1871 census above is a bit of a shocker as none of our family moved to London as far as we knew, I will go and peruse this a bit more.

Ginny yes, we need the birth cerificate definitely., for this one i think -

Births Dec 1856
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hughes Annie Manchester 8d 108

Lancashire Birth indexes for the years: 1856
Surname Forename(s) Sub-District Registers At Mother's Maiden Name Reference
HUGHES Annie Ancoats Manchester ANC/78/31

as this fits her age better than the 1860 one. (she's 21 on her marriage cert in 1879)

Thanks a lot! :-)

Thank you,

What does FMP stand for?

Is it possible to do that for earlier than 1837 births?

Alemap Report 3 Jul 2011 12:23

Hi Joe, FMP is "Find my past" as Mel said. You can find siblings by putting in the family name and the mother's surname. Unfortunately, it is only from 1912 onwards. Before 1912 it is harder, especially if the family has moved around different registration districts. Pam

Sorry about that, yes it should have been Find my Past!! :-D
