Ladies hi... like Elaine says I'm not sure that thank you sums up what I mean. I think it's fantastic that people help you out so much and point you in teh right direction. But for everyone that has contributed to this thread - and for those that will you really are providing 'goosebump' moments for me, and I'm sure now Elaine - thank you!

Elaine - I've just started looking into this branch of the family, and I tend to put in the basics I have been told and then get to each person and look for the certs/ further information when the time permits. So no, not all of my tree will make sense as I am trying to piece it together - apologies for any confusion - I haven't yet got to Pearl.

Will keep you posted ladies - and please do keep suggestions coming. I'm coming to the conclusion that in fact Ella and Arthur weren't married as suspected.

LadyKira Report 13 Jun 2011 14:28

It is possile they nevr married. However Ella has both a surname that has a number of variations and a forename with a number of variations. It is possible she was previously married even for a short time thus explaining not finding a marriage. That is why it is important to verify what you know about the children. If Pearl was born pre 1911 we should be able to find her. And why would she be Wood if Arthur was not her father?

It would be helpful to state what you know for sure with certificates etc. How do you know of Pearl. Is she someone you met or just heard about. Same with the others. Why do you think there were different fathers.?

rhodabreakell Report 14 Jun 2011 08:29

LadyKira hi
I've seen Ella's name in so many different variations it's hard to make sure you have the right one! I haven't heard that she married prior to Arthur and teh family think that Nana was illegitimate, but no one will really talk about it.
Dad remembers hearing about a Pearl, who would have been his Auntie but we don't know if she is a Wood - I have put her name in as a placeholder to investigate. We just know she died young. We have been led to believe that Alma and Nana were born of the same father, I have Nana's and Chester's (Arthur) b certificate and have sent off for Alma's to see if Arthur is named. Will keep you posted.
It's difficult because the family won't talk about it and Dad was very young so can't remember a great deal. He just remembers that Grandma Wood (Ella) was a kept woman and Arthur disappeared.
Will let you know what the birt certs say. Thank you....

West Bridgford is a town in the Rushcliffe borough of Nottinghamshire, England. It lies immediately south of the city of Nottingham, delimited by the River Trent; this proximity means that it forms a continuous urban area with Nottingham, effectively makes West Bridgford a suburb of the city, and means it was chosen as the administrative centre for Nottinghamshire County Council.

I think I saw something about Rushcliffe earlier. and dismissed it. :-(

Hi Ladykira,

Yes - Chester is Arthur Chester Wood [Arthur G Wood] - Arthur and Zebe are the twins Rhoda mentioned who have Arthur Wood recorded as their father on their birth certs.

Would it be possible for you email me the ancestry stuff? [I will message you with my email address] I tried again today for another free trial but it wouldnt allow me! I can access free at the archives - but I dont think that I can wait until I get there again!

Yes - Arthur was single in 1911 [as per the census] I can check at the archives [when I next visit] on the electoral registers to see when he left - but he certainly wasnt there in 1915 as his mother was on her own then.

It certainly looks like the correct Pearl - and she is registered as Trautman - not Wood - and on her death double barrelled with both names??? [interesting!] This has to be her death in Mansfield not only because of the names but also because Arthur Chester Wood's army records show that his parents lived in Mansfield. If her father was married to her mother, she would surely just be recorded as Pearl Wood?

I am not receiving notifications for updates to this thread! Is anyone else having the same problems?

lainie39 Report 19 Jun 2011 17:48

I don’t know whether I am searching wrongly, but these are the nearest deaths I can find for Ella under the Wood name. I can find nothing that looks like her registered under Trautmann/Troutman/Trotman etc or double barrelled - the search results only come up with the first name written.

WOOD Ellen Mansfield Nottinghamshire 1926 Oct-Nov-Dec
WOOD Ellen Basford Nottinghamshire 1940 Jan-Feb-Mar
WOOD Ellen Mansfield Nottinghamshire 1944 Oct-Nov-Dec

There are too many Ella/Ellen/Helene Woods in England to contemplate - I concentrated my search on Nottinghamshire because last known place for her was Mansfield [recorded as the address for Arthur Chester parents] and her parents lived in Loughborough. I searched from 1916 [when she gave birth to the twins]-1984.

The nearest Arthur Wood in age that I can find is

Wood Arthur 45 Southwell 7b 660

Again I concentrated on the same area because Arthur Wood is a common name and there are none with the middle name of Larenze.

Not doing too well - am I??

Marriages - because I cannot find a Trautmann to a Wood - I tried to see if Ella had already been married [and therefore married Arthur under her married name] - I searched from 1900 to 1939 - because Arthur was deceased by 1938 at his daughter’s wedding. Nothing under Trautmann etc but these Trotman’s came up

TROTMAN Ellen England Warwickshire, Warwick 1896
TROTMAN Ellen England Somerset, Frome 1897
TROTMAN Ellen England London, Camberwell 1898
TROTMAN Ellen England Gloucestershire, Bristol 1903
TROTMAN Ellen Mary England Kent, Tonbridge 1905
TROTMAN Ellen England Oxfordshire, Witney 1907
TROTMAN Ellen England Lancashire, Bolton 1913
TROTMAN Ellen U England Essex, West Ham 1914
TROTMAN Ellen R England Gloucestershire, Westbury on Severn 1920
TROTMAN Ellen V England Wiltshire, Swindon 1920
TROTMAN Ellen L England Warwickshire, Birmingham 1921
TROTMAN Ellen A England Middlesex, Uxbridge 1927
TROTMAN Ellen England London, Lewisham 1931
TROTMAN Ellen F England Gloucestershire, Bristol 1933
TROTMAN Ellen L England Warwickshire, Alcester 1934
TROTMAN Ellen S England Gloucestershire, Northleach 1936
TROTMAN Ellen England London, Islington 1937

Still not doing very well - am I???

Rhoda - any news on certs?

Rhoda so far I can see nothing to indicate there was more than one father. Alma and Pearl are born after the oyhers and still have the name Wood. They were born within the time frame that we know they were together because of the war record.

Ladies... this is fab, and thank you again.

However I need to go away and digest all of this and come back to you both with an update / thoughts. I need to print this out and go through each post seperately so I can make sense of it! There's so much info here it's brilliant.

No - I'm not getting notifications of this thread being added too either - Cynthia sent me an email to prompt me to return. I'll investigate that.

Thank you Ladies,

Rhoda,

Sorry, but this is work 'stuff'

I sent a message to Genes on 17/6/11 regarding not receiving updates for this thread - and also that we cannot access further info on the hot matches when 'view' is selected.

My message has not even been read by Genes yet! - so no wonder that nothing has been done about these problems. I am not the only one who has complained about these problems - and there has not been any announcements from Genes on the Announcements board. Are our messages/emails being received and read at all?

I post on this thread out of desperation and frustration!!

Hello,

I've been sending messages out to remind folks about replies on their threads for several years now.

However, during the recent changes, GenesR have introduced a Watch This button at the top of the message - next to the Add Reply button. If you click on that, you will receive an email from Genes to let you know about the reply. As I am on here for a great deal of time, I rarely use it but it is very useful for those who are intermittent users.

Unfortunately, many new folk have not twigged on to this facility!

Lainie, I think you will get a reply if you go through the Help button and on to Contact us (above right). Also, take a look at the Suggestions board and you will see that other people have commented on the Hot Match prob etc.

Hi Cynthia,

Thank you for your reply.

I have clicked on the 'watch this thread' button - but although I started to receive updates for the thread this has since stopped since the 16th/17th of this month.

I will try the help contact.

Thank you.
