If she was married before her marriage to Arthur she would marry under her new name and i can see one or two possibiliies for that.

Rhoda I have found your Ancestry tree and I am puzzled by it.

We have established that Ella was with her parents in 1911 at 27 years old and unmarried. On your tree you have 3 spouses for Ella.
Two are unamed and undated plus Arthur Wood

You have a daughter Pearl Wood born 1904 (which I do not see on freeBmd)
to an unknown father
(some 8 years before we know she was still single)
so why would she have been Wood?
Alma Wood 1914 you have with the same unknown father.

Chester Wood 1916 – 1943
Zebe Doreen Wood 1916 – 1999
These two are noted as children of Arthur Wood.

Something is not right here. :-S :-S

I am still havimg no luck with any marriage for these two though! - I think we may just have to accept that they never married! :-(

Glad you liked my lunch time offering.

As I was saying both names can have variations and people wrote what they heard. So I searched for El* Tr*m*n so just using the domint letters.

Ella is usually short for Eleanor but there are often variations such as Elinor. I believe this surname may also have variations.

Can anyone help me find a birth for Ella Trautman? 1884 Loughborough, Leicestershire.

The only births I can find for around that year are;

TRAUTMANN Anna Longim England Leicestershire, Barrow upon Soar 1879
TRAUTMANN Gertrude Elizabeth England Leicestershire, Barrow upon Soar 1879
TRAUTMANN Frederick Otto England Leicestershire, Barrow upon Soar 1882
TRAUTMANN Edith Dorothea England Leicestershire, Loughborough 1886
TRAUTMANN Paul Robert England Leicestershire, Loughborough 1888
TRAUTMANN Octavia Flora England Leicestershire, Loughborough 1890
TRAUTMANN Charles Oscar England Leicestershire, Loughborough 1892

I was just trying to approach finding this marriage from the opposite direction to see if Ella was married, but then discovered that I couldnt find a birth for her either!

My understanding is that 'Ella' can be a short form for Ellen or Elizabeth - so wandered about Gertrude Elizabeth [above] but still cannot find a marriage for her to a Wood.

Many thanks.

Hi Rhoda,

Cannot wait to receive your message! - I am hoping that this means that possibly your mum is a Wood relative!?

I will keep you posted of progress and Elaine I'm responding back to you as soon as I have written this and called my Mum!
Thank you
Rhoda :-D

Rhoda

Two things could explain the birth certificates with Arthur Wood named as father if they were not in fact married

1. Arthur went to the registrar with Ella. Ella gave her surname as Wood and Arthur said he was the father.

2. Ella went to the Registrar alone, said her surname was Wood, and her husband's name was Arthur.

You don't, and didn't, have to produce evidence that you were married .............. your word is considered good enough.

so Arthur and Ella may never have married at all.

I did a lot of research on Alfred Burton Wood on a thread over a year ago and strangely was contacted by the OP today. Will put her onto this.

Thank you SAFC - this certainly looks like him doesn't it - Lorenzo isn't a common name. Another piece to add to him...
