Hi I'm hoping to find further information regarding Samuel Pritchard/Prichard census/marriage pre 1871 which was when he died, leaving his wife and a 2yr old daughter Ellen/Helen. |

Her son is my great grandfather Thomas Pritchard Owen born west derby, lancs 1888, however what has become clear is that his mother was unmarried at the time of his birth, so have searched under thomas pritchard, he doesn't appear as Thomas Pritchard Owen until 1901, however I wonder where he was while she was off visiting on census day 1891? |

Well it sounds as if the man she later married was the father of her son and she gave him the father's surname as his second name. Perhaps after she married him the son took his surname. Would he then be Thomas Owen Pritchard Owen? |

This is confusing! You say he turns up on the 1901 census as Thomas Pritchard Owen but his parents didn't marry until 1914. |

Oh, I see, on the 1901 census Arthur & Helen are living as man & wife. |

by 1901 ellen and Arthur were living together and had further offspring all bearing Arthurs surname, I understand its confusing, tell me I had a hard time getting anywhere with him. |

They do make it confusing for you, don't they? I see on the 1891 census Arthur H. is 48 but in 1901 he's 50 whereas Ellen/Helen went from 22 to 32. |

I don't understand why he can't be Thomas Owen Pritchard born July West Derby. |
