The Cornwall OPCs are great, I know from personal contact with two of them.
But I think we're in South Africa at this point for sure. ;)
AG08, there are instructions at the SA archives site for obtaining copies of documents, but I'll wish you luck with that. I had some. I found two documents, either the same document or very similar ones (letter/s written by the man I was looking for to local government). I wrote to the two archives that held them. One said to go away and hire a local researcher to go and get a copy for me. The other said how was it supposed to send me photocopies if I hadn't given a postal address? So I did, and they sent me a half dozen pages free of charge.

Thanks all.
Joy yes have used the OPC's a huge amount, but tehy were of no help to me to solve this particular mystery!
Thanks Sylvia for confirming that.
Thanks Janey, I'll have a go and try my luck!

Hi Janey,
Just following up on this Annie Melissa Cooper.
I can't locate this family in the 1901 census, this is as they were in 1891:
The 1891 English Census shows the Cooper family residing at High Street, in the Civil Parish of Saffron Walden, in the Administrative County of Essex. The household consists of:
Henry F (45) Head, Printer and Compositor, Employed, Born Diss, Norfolk Melissa (41) Wife, Dressmaker, Employer, Born Thornham Egbert Frederick (13) Son, Scholar, Born Saffron Walden, Essex Henry J (11) Son, Scholar, Born Saffron Walden, Essex Frank J (8), Son, Scholar, Born Saffron Walden, Essex Annie M E (4) Daughter, Saffron Walden, Essex, England James Cooper (81) Father, Widower, Living on own means, Born Diss, Norfolk
I can't find any matching death for Annie's mother Melissa or her father Henry, so I am wondering of as per your suggestion that she left England with her family.
You found the following record:
COOPER A M Unknown F 1905 Southampton South Africa Cape
I'm not sure if what you found gives you any more detail or if you can see if any of her family travelled with her? I can't locate a matching record on Ancestry ..
I have emailed the South African Archives, fingers crossed I will geta reply!
Any help would be appreciated! :-)

I just did (as I think Janey did) the free search

Hmm ... Our A.M. Cooper was a Gwennap by 1951 when her husband Charles Gwennap died! And her estate papers are dated 1956. Oh, and she was born in 1887. ;)
So I think this is the only one that might be her:
Name: Miss A M COOPER Date of departure: 10 September 1898 Port of departure: Southampton Passenger destination port: Cape, South Africa Passenger destination: Cape, South Africa
Does the image show any others with her?
Possibly both of these, then:
COOPER A M Unknown F 1898 Southampton South Africa Cape COOPER A M Unknown F 1905 Southampton South Africa Cape (no details available for the 1905 one?)
but I don't think the later ones are her.

Thank Janey and Chris.
I too think the 1898 looks the best one. I did not get a chance to compare anything last night but will try today.
I had found a Cooper that went out to South Africa and looks as though he was an uncle or relative to Annie, possibly why they went out.
Maybe her parents (if they went) just travelled under mr & Mrs Cooper or something vague like that!
Cheers everyone, you are terrific! :-)
