i tracing for a family friend, pat cooke...his father was walter joseph cook. it was walter joseph who was sank by a u-boat in 1943. he was in merchant navy aboard SS Harbury. i have traced pats g/mothers line back to his gt gt grandad...joseph bratcher, b.1844/5(he was married to rebeckah(rebecca?)tucker, 1847-1888. made it a little easier cos bratcher is a bit unusual. only got as far as pats' grandad, william joseph cook, on the cook side. suppose the thread is "killed by a u-boat" isnt it? i get v.confused about all these threads....never was good at needlework! hahaha

would like to know if its easier to trace family backwards? please dont laugh...i was given dundalk. co.louth. ireland as the possible birthplace of my gt gt grandma, catherine rice, and her father, peter rice. as i only live 16mls fr dundalk,i wondered about asking at the local RC church, for bygone rices or by paying a visit to foughart graveyard, where a lot of residents of dundalk are buried..& .making a list of any rices. would any of these ways be any use,or is it just me talking thro my a***!!!

Elaine...I tend to forget this is an "international board" and write as I speak...nearly started with Elaine....Alana...then realised what I was about...!!! Didn't notice the "expressions" until I read through the threads.....

Have been all over the Co Mayo/Co Galway....cannot locate/connect any Mahons listed above on the English Census..

Going back to Joseph and family...Wood St. Ince in Makerfield.....(Just in case there is a family connection to Dennis somewhere along this long long line)

1871...Shows a daughter Ellen married to an Edward McDonnell ...well she is also living at 19a Wood St in 1881...entry was listed on next Census Page...
Transcribed as "McDonald"
Ellen and Edward married 1868 Reg. Wigan
Edward died aged 32 Death reg March quarter 1875..
There was also a Catherine born 1871 reg Wigan

Cover your eyes, EGB. ;) Jane Kelly comes to us from another thread altogether -- I'll remember what it's about when Elaine gets that cert and adds to the thread. ;)

Elaine...You have the Heart across me so you do..!!

The Joseph Mahon (b 1827) may have been an elder brother to Dennis (just a suggestion) and he was still in Ireland 1863 when Harriet was born...the earliest Census he would show up on 1871 (jax) yesterday.

In the name of the wee man who is Jane Kelly...?

Poor Elaine. ;)

Have I missed it somewhere? - what was Joseph's occupation on Denis's marriage certificate(s)?

If Joseph the hairdresser was living in 1871 he very probably is not the right person in any event, or why would Denis say in 1868 that his father was deceased?

pilot.familysearch has one death in Ireland in the right time period to fit:

Name: Joseph Mahon
Registration District: Mohill
Event Type: DEATHS
Registration Quarter and Year: 1865
Estimated Birth Year: 1805
Age (at Death): 60
Film Number: 101582
Volume Number: 8
Page Number: 196
Digital Folder Number: 4200214
Image Number: 00454

joseph the hairdresser is also on the 1871 census, having moved to prescot. joseph, dennis' father was living in 1861 but deceased in 1868...so he wouldnt be round in 1871.
