Thankyou Jill. I certainly do need to check all the spelling out.

Just to confirm Jonesey's advice. An alternative spelling to Goodall is Goodhall. I know as both names exist in my husband's family way back.

I agree Jonesey. I am going to get all the information in first this time instead of jumping to conclusions. And I will check out the Goodhall connection just in case it is a misspell. Thank you again

I know that waiting can be very frustrating but if I were you I would hold off doing anything else with that Goodall line until the copy certificate arrives.
Hopefully the information it includes will set you back on the right track.
Good luck.
P.S. Just a bit of advice. There is and never has been a standardised spelling of names. It is quite common to see peoples surnames spelled differently in different records. It should be remembered that many people were illiterate (Even up to the beginning of the 20th century) and so relied on others to complete such things as census returns for them. If their name was spelled slightly differently on different occasions they may not have been in a position to query or correct it.
The same caution should be exercised with peoples ages. Many people did not know their true age, others for various reasons lied about their age.

Thank youTania, I haven't found that before. It does say Goodhall though and I am pretty sure he is a Goodall.

I agree with Jonesey. This Edward is also a fitter's labourer in an ironworks which ties in with 1911 but you really need the marriage cert

Yes K, It was after finding this bomb shell that I realized that I had my grand mother married to the wrong Edward and even found the one I married her to being at home with his dad. He is closer to her age and I guess I put 2 and 2 together and got 5. Who knew she would be married to someone older than his father.

If you obtain a copy of their marriage certificate that should give you details of his father. That will assist in tracking him down in earlier census records.

Edward Goodall 1864 was born in Wolverhampton Staffordshire I have found an Edward born then anyway and have the Birth Register
I have found a marriage between an Edward Goodall and Sarah Cope in 1906 3q
I don't have any details on his parentage. And there are so many Edwards around.
Thanks for your time and patience
I'm hoping that the bulk of the ancestors are the same. This Edward looks like he might be and uncle or second cousin of the same family. Maybe I won't need to delete them all it that is the case?

The first thing to do is to let people who may be able to help you have a few more facts.
Such as according to the 1911 census what is the correct Edward Goodall's (b1864) birthplace?
When and where did Sarah and Edward marry?
Have you got a copy of their marriage certificate? If you have what details are showing about Edward's father?
Obviously if your tree currently contains information about the ancestors of the wrong Edward Goodall these should be deleted. To do that you will need to start deleting with his earliest ancestors first until you get as far as Edward himself. Once that is done you can change his birth year and birthplace to the correct ones. Finally you can then delete the Edward Goodall that you added as the second partner.

Hi Everyone, Can anyone help me out of the mess I have gotten myself into?
I have my grand mother Sarah Jane Cope 1887 Wolverhampton Staffordshire married to one Edward Goodall 1889 and all of his family into the the 16th century. Big problem. When I accessed the 1911 census this weekend I find that she could be married that Edward because he was single and living at home with his dad and step mom.
Sarah is married to an Edward Goodall though. He is not 22 though he is 47 and she is 24. Wow, what a surprise. The problem now is all that I can find of him is his birth registry. THere was an Edward born in 1964. But I don't know who he belongs to and I don't know how to change Sarah over to him.
My dad's mom was named cope. I found the registry of his birth. Both his parents died when he was a child and I certainly didn't know them. He also died young before I was interested in family trees and such. My parents divorced and we never knew his side of the family at all. I didn't even now Sarah was my grand mother until someone on gr helped me out.
Thomas Goodall (my father) 1918
Right now I have added Edward 47 yrs old as another partner to Sarah and I hope someone can help.
Optimistic. Victoria
