Thanks Lynne, I'll keep that handy for the future.

Hi, Terence,
Just reading your thread and noticed your comment on 6th Mar about the age differences between 1841 and 1851.

This should help to explain that -

Note:
In the 1841 Census a policy of rounding down ages was in place.

* As such people aged:
* 15-19 were recorded as 15;
* 20-24 were recorded as 20;
* 25-29 were recorded as 25;
* 30-34 were recorded as 30;
* 35-39 were recorded as 35;

Hi Again,
Arrived today is the certificate of marriage (dated 18 Nov 1880) of George Thompson aged 46 widower, and Elizabeth Ann Thompson aged 37 widow, at Broughton, Lincs. Reg: 7a 1277.

His father George Thompson, gardener. Her father Andrew Innes Douglas, now Surgeon. Witnesses: William Thompson, Kate Thompson.

This now shows that both were married before, as we suspected! But, she was previously married to a William Thompson. The 1881 census shows a George Thompson as father of Elizabeth 1869, Lily 1872 and Martha 1876. Was Elizabeth 1844 still pregnant when her 'supposed' husband William died in 1875?

We cannot find William and Elizabeth on any of the census'.

Does the information on the 4 certificates help you to help us??

Terence.

Terence Report 28 Mar 2011 12:36

Hi Sylvia and Janey,
We now have 3 of 4 certificates ordered.
The first was the 1/11/1865 marriage in Scawby, Lincs, Reg: 7a 1311, of William Thompson, blacksmith, (father Richard, farmer) to Elizabeth Ann Douglas (we already had the father Andrew Innes Douglas, doctor ,but her mother, only as Ann ????).

The second (10 days later) Birth: 2/9/1861, in Brigg, Lincs, Reg: 7a 605, Catherine Dennis, Father George Thompson, mother Elizabeth Thompson, formerly Thompson!!

The third (also 10 days later) was the birth, in 20/4/1869 in Barton, Lincs, Reg: 7a 635, of Ann Elizabeth, father, George Green Thompson, mother, Emily Thompson, formerly Cash!?

This still leaves us confused, as George Thompson 1806 produced 12 children, he must have had siblings, but it is difficult to find them on Familysearch. Did he have a brother Richard?
The name "Green' keeps cropping up also.
Did more than one female Thompson marry another Thompson?

Waiting for the certificate of the marriage in Dec 1880 in Brigg, Lincs, Reg: 7a 1277 of another George Thompson to Elizabeth Ann Thompson.

Is this any help to you both?

Terence.

Thanks Sylvia, the above is the one I found. Also thanks for advising that father's names are not likely to be found on pre 1837 records.
I''ll see if there are parish records, it might be handy for other ancestors.

Is this the marriage you found ..... on the beta.familysearch site?

record title: England Marriages, 1538–1973

groom's name: George Thompson
bride's name: Sarah Dennis Green
marriage date: 24 Aug 1831
marriage place: Bigby, Lincoln, England
indexing project (batch) number: M02701-3
system origin: England-ODM
source film number: 1450442

This is supposed to be a copy from the Parish Register ...... and indicates that fathers' names were not on the original

Hi Terence

There won't be a marriage certificate for George Thompson ....... registration didn't come in until July 1 1837

so you would have to find the Parish Register

and it might or might not show the fathers' names

Most of the ones that I have seen prior to about 1832/33 do not show the names.

Hi Janey,
I found the 1841 and the 1851 record on Findmypast, as you have reproduced above.

Would the marriage (in 1831) certificate of George Thompson 1805 show the fathers of bride and groom?

I had forgotten the "rounding" situation.

Thanks again Janey.

Terence.

JaneyCanuck Report 7 Mar 2011 00:12

Unfortunately Catherine Dennis Green was already a widow in 1841:

Civil parish: Wrawby
George Thompson 35
Sarah Thompson 25
Fanny Thompson 7
John Thompson 8
George Thompson 7
Kitty Thompson 5
Henry Thompson 4
Lucy Thompson 2
James Thompson 8 MO
> Kitty Green 50

So Sarah was 39 in 1851 and 25 in 1841 -- to be expected -- ages were rounded down to the nearest 5 in 1841. So a person who was 29 in 1841 would have been reported as 25.

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 7 Mar 2011 00:05

What site are you looking at the 1851 census record at?

This is the household per Ancestry:

George Thompson 46
Sarah Thompson 39
John Thompson 18
George Thompson 16
Henry Thompson 13
Lucy Thompson 12
James Thompson 10
Alice Thompson 8
William Thompson 7
Dennis Thompson 4
> Sarah Thompson 2
Emma Thompson 1
Catharine Dennis Green 53

It very definitely says "2" on the census record.

At Ancestry, corrections made by users are "user contributed content" and are attached to the record immediately, without review by the site management. So they're buyer-beware information -- but the info is there for anyone who see it, and it is also searchable, i.e. if the error were there, she would become searchable by both birthdates, once the correction was entered.

If you're looking at FindMyPast, my understanding is that it is loathe to accept corrections from users -- I've read people here say that they have submitted corrections to blatant errors and they have been rejected. But it's certainly worth a try!

At least you can rest assured that the info is correct at Ancestry. ;)

Hi Silvia & Janey,
Whilst waiting for the above certificates, we have only just realised there is a transcription error regarding the birth of Sarah Thompson supposedly born 1828! Just found the marriage details of George Thompson 1805 & Sarah Dennis Green 1812 as 24 Aug 1831 in Bigby, Lincs. The 1851 transcription shows young Sarah near the bottom of the list as "aged 23 born 1828" (3 years before the marriage above)!!! Looking at a copy of the original census, we are sure that the age is 2 making her born 1848? Other records confirm her birth as 1849/50. Shall I leave it to you experts to report this?

Whilst writing there also seems to be a difference between the 1841 & 1851 censis' regarding the birth year of mother Sarah, 1812 (aged 19 at marriage or 1816 aged 15??

Also, can I ask your help in finding (or confirm) the father of Sarah Dennis Green 1812/16. It seems, as we know, there is a grandaughter with the same name as the grandmother: Catherine Dennis Green. We have a Sarah Johnson marrying a John Dennis Green in Wrawby 8/11/1810, which seems to fit? Also found an Elizabeth Dennis Green, a sister?

Thank again for all your help.

Terence.

Terence -- just be sure to order it as Catharine Dennis Thompson, since that's what the GRO index actually says -- i.e. don't use the mistranscription "Donna" when you order.

Terence

Terence Report 1 Mar 2011 22:09

Hi again Sylvia & Janey,
With all your very well appreciated efforts tracing "Catharine Donner Thompson" we have decided to order that particular certificate to asertain whether she was George Thompson's first child.

Now we have to wait with eager anticipation! Many thanks again for all your work.

Hi Silvia & Janey,
As we are in Australia, we are waiting for a relative in the UK to send their notes within 2 weeks!!

We have ordered marriage certificates for Elizabeth Ann Douglas & William Thompson, plus, Elizabeth Ann Thompson & George Thompson.

Also ordered birth certificate for the first girl Elizabeth Ann Thompson 1869.

We have a certificate for Beatrice Douglas Thompson, showing mother as Elizabeth Ann Thompson (nee Douglas) & father as George Thompson.

Shall we wait and see what happens?

Terence.

JaneyCanuck Report 28 Feb 2011 14:29

Well I'm a total idiot and not to be trusted.

I opened the image, saw that it was typed, assumed it had been correctly transcribed and didn't look further! (How could anybody read that clear Dennis and transcribe it as Donna? That's why I always used to advise people to check the image themselves before ordering a certificate and not go by the FreeBMD or Ancestry transcription!)

In my defence, seven hours ago was a lot later where I am than where Sylvia is. ;)

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 28 Feb 2011 06:38

I've just looked on the GRO Index on both ancestry and on freebmd ....... and ti is Catharine Dennis Thompson in the Index .... so the record has been transcribed wrongly.

I have submitted a correction to freebmd ....... let's see if it is accepted!!

Hi All,
Thanks for help. We do have some certificates of some of that family at another address (computer broblems elswhere), so I will have to get back to you all later. My time on the net is almost up, so it may be a day or so before I get back to you all.
Thank you again very much for your help so far.

I've looked everywhere I know ......... but the girls don't appear to have been baptised

or, more likely, the Parish Registers have not been transcribed onto the sites that I know about

I cannot find any of the marriages or any of the baotisms

there may well be a site for Lincolnshire, and someone else may know, but I don't!
