Ok.. I'm confused on Dist 14 on how you use that part, I think I'm going to give up on this, you all seem to be trying so hard and like you say she may not have been registered at birth though it does seem strange to not find her in census 1861 and 1871 at least with a father named thomas.
What can I say.. I know it may look bad on giving up but I don't know what else to say. I'm going to say thank you all for your help.

It doesn't help that dispite the house numbers being clearly on the enumeration sheets FMP have missed them off Grrrr

I cannot find that address on the 1871 census, the numbers stop at 112 for Enumeration Dist 14.... Grrr

I think it might be on the next enumeration district :(

Just as a daft fact - Alice's address was 113 Wellington Row when she married. It sold for £465k in 2007.

Christine, sorry - didn't mean to ignore your question on earlier page about FreeBMD. It's one of the best sites for record searches and it's free.

Have just realised that on the marriage record she's described as "full age" meaning 21 or over.

If she WAS born 1857 then that would be wrong. However, she could have fibbed about her age at the marriage if she was avoiding the need for parental consent.

Another thing to consider is that Alice might have been a preferred name and not her actual given name - e.g. a middle name. The registrar would on;y record the info given and no proof was required.

Oooo which 1871 census would that be.

WayneTracey

WayneTracey Report 20 Feb 2011 17:08

The only way it'll have his name wrong is either if the vicar had a fit of memory loss (has been known) or the father didn't exist :(

It is possible she was a base born child :-/

....it's worth mentioning there is an 1857 born Alice Howard on the 1871 census (this could be the one found on the BMD)

I'll check the witness's on the marriage cert see if there are any clues there.

I have found the thomas howard census 1861, 1871, and 1881, I am starting to think we may not find her, I don't really want to order a birthcertificate 1857 B/G just incase it's not her, do you think the marriage certificate may have her fathers name wrong.

No I do not know when she died, I've found the Alice Howard 1857 B/G, they is also a Shoreditch one,
sorry a little thick here, what do you mean by using FreeBMD.

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 20 Feb 2011 16:34

Do you know when she died?

Depending when it was registered, the death record sometimes gives full date of birth.

PS - make a note of FreeBMD if you're not already using it.
