Jane Amelia BURGESS was born in 1885 in Bethnal Green. Her father was Charles Burgess born 1852 and her mother Sarah. I have found this family on various census - Jane had a brother Thomas born 1874 and a sister Sarah born 1877. I haven't been able to find a marriage for Charles and Sarah anywhere so sent off for Jane Amelia's birth cert which gives her parents as Charles Burgess and Sarah HOUCHEN. The only marriage for Sarah Houchen is 1870 to either Laven (?) YOUNG or William STAPLETON. In 1871 Charles is single with his parents, so it is possible that Sarah was married previously - but to who? and what happened? - Did she and Charles ever marry? |

Oh! Good point. She was 29 in 1881 census and 39 in 1891 census so about 1852. Perhaps the birth in Stepney is not her. |

Patchem - The 1881 census just gives London; the 1891 gives MILE END as her birth place. I had no idea what Laven might mean. I'll try Leven instead! Thanks. |

There's baptisms of 2 children here on the same day. For Thomas it says born 24 May, for Sarah 12 April, no years given but parents are same, address same, 55 Appian Rd. and father is a finisher for both. |

On Sarah Mahala's baptism record the name looks more like Houchin. There were 4 children of the couple baptised same day. She was born 7 Aug. 1851 and baptised 18 Nov. 1857. |

Lever Young married Sarah Ann Ainsworth so Sarah Mahala must have married William Joseph Stapleton. |
