Thank you for that Rootgatherer, the only trouble with that is that I live in Sydney!
I would dearly love to be able to go check it out, but I am afraid that it won't be any time soon.
Could I write to them and get a look-up, do you think?

The Mitchell Library in Glasgow have Cemetery records for most of the Glasgow Cemeteries. The most likely cemetery for Govan area would be Craigton Cemetery. The next nearest would be Cardonald.

I feel so silly, not seeing the 2nd page. This is the first time that I have used this facility, so am still learning, and that was a very big lesson.
Now to your question, Kay, I really have no indication as to whether or not they were Catholic.
I have the death certificates for Elizabeth Bull widow of Jeremiah Rodgers,
John Bulla, the father of Elizabeth, Jeremiah Rodgers and the birth of Bess (Bessie) Rodgers, but of course none of these give any indication of religious affiliation.

Is there a index to cemeteries in the area that I could look at to try to find where they were buried?

Those marriages that took place outside of a church.chapel or register offic......they could marry in the bride or grooms home or the local pub,as long as it was conducted by an official according to the rites,Scotland.by declaration was abolished in 1939.

My own gtgranmother married at the home of gtgrandad by declaration according to the rite of the Church of Scotland..

I was wondering as Bessies dad was Irish --- RC?? could she have had a RC burial if she had been baptsised as RC?

Hi Kay,

I have been having trouble for the last 8 hours trying to get back to you without success, so hopefully this one will go through.
When Robert McFadyen & Bessie Rodgers married it was according to the rights of the Free Church of Scotland.
When Elizabeth (one of their children) married it was according to the United Free Church.
When Helen (Ellen or Nellie) married (another of their children) it was "By Declaration". I am not sure what this means, so could you explain it to me. Would it have something to do with the Catholic Church?

Here goes again. I have been having trouble adding a response, so let's hope this one works.
When Robert & Bessie married it was according to the rites of the Free Church of Scotland.
When Elizabeth (a daughter) married it was according to the rites of the United Free Chruch.
When Helen (also known as Ellen & Nellie) married it was "By Declaration" - can anyone tell me what this means? Does this have anything to do with a Catholic marriage?

I have just posted a new message, and once again it is not showing - I am doing something wrong?
Anyway, the comment was that when Robert & Bessie married in 1895 it was according to the forms of the Free Church of Scotland, when one of their daughters (Elizabeth) married it was according to the United Free Church. When Helen (also known as Ellen & Nellie) married it was "By Declaration". Can anyone please tell me what this means? Does this have anything to do with the Catholic Church?

Could be her, I suppose, though she & Robert married according to the Free Church of Scotland & Elizabeth (a daughter) married according to the United Free Church.
Helen (Ellen or Nellie, another child) married "By Declaration". Can someone tell me what this means, please.

Pamela.

There is 1 death showing in the Catholic Death and Burial Registers 1909 to 1914,

Elizabeth McFadyen...

Pamela

Pamela Report 16 Feb 2011 21:40

The trouble is that we have too many variants:
Bessie, Bess, Elizabeth
McFadyen, MacFadyen, McFadyan (and probably others)
Rodgers, Rogers, Rodger, Roger

It could possibly be mistranscribed in the index. This happened with my grandparents marriage, although that was probably easier to find because at leat I had one name that was correct.

Robert McFadyen remarried in 1914 to Mary Fox. So that narrows it down to 1909 to 1914.

I have the death certificate for Robert 4 Oct 1941 at Govan which states that he was an electrician (retired) widower of 1st Elizabeth Rogers & 2nd Mary Wilson or Fox. This information was given by his son A McFadyen of 113 Elder Park St Glasgow.

Kay???? Report 16 Feb 2011 21:09

I did a death search for McFadyen/MacFadyen/McFadyan 1909--1920 and nothing is showing to match in age or name.or even an Elizabeth.
The 1911 Scotland census will be out in April which isnt too long now,so maybe Robert can be found as a widower,,

It wasn't Robert that had died?mistakes are made when transcibing even in GRO with Scotlands having more details to transcribe a mistake may have been made.

Pamela Report 16 Feb 2011 20:48

Robert McFadyen was originally a butcher but then he appeared to have changed profession to that of electrician.
Jeremiah Rodgers was a shipyard labourer/iron driller
