Could be her, I suppose, though she & Robert married according to the Free Church of Scotland & Elizabeth (a daughter) married according to the United Free Church.
Helen (Ellen or Nellie, another child) married "By Declaration". Can someone tell me what this means, please.

Those marriages that took place outside of a church.chapel or register offic......they could marry in the bride or grooms home or the local pub,as long as it was conducted by an official according to the rites,Scotland.by declaration was abolished in 1939.


My own gtgranmother married at the home of gtgrandad by declaration according to the rite of the Church of Scotland..

I was wondering as Bessies dad was Irish --- RC?? could she have had a RC burial if she had been baptsised as RC?

I feel so silly, not seeing the 2nd page. This is the first time that I have used this facility, so am still learning, and that was a very big lesson.
Now to your question, Kay, I really have no indication as to whether or not they were Catholic.
I have the death certificates for Elizabeth Bull widow of Jeremiah Rodgers,
John Bulla, the father of Elizabeth, Jeremiah Rodgers and the birth of Bess (Bessie) Rodgers, but of course none of these give any indication of religious affiliation.

Is there a index to cemeteries in the area that I could look at to try to find where they were buried?

The Mitchell Library in Glasgow have Cemetery records for most of the Glasgow Cemeteries. The most likely cemetery for Govan area would be Craigton Cemetery. The next nearest would be Cardonald.

Thank you for that Rootgatherer, the only trouble with that is that I live in Sydney!
I would dearly love to be able to go check it out, but I am afraid that it won't be any time soon.
Could I write to them and get a look-up, do you think?
