Margaret Report 16 Feb 2011 07:00

Hi Valerie,

Thanks again. Will definitely have to check this one out. If it is in fact my mother I am confused as I was told she died in Queensland. Where does BMD get their information from, do you know? Could this be sheer co-incidence, or could my grandparents have been up to their old tricks again (providing false information)? The further I dig, the more confused I get!
Regards,
Margaret

Margaret, Hamilton in N.S.W. is very close to the large, industrial city of Newcastle which is about 2 hours north of Sydney. It is an old suburb which has been modernised, but still retains many of the older homes and shops. It is a very busy place on any given day. I have been there many times.

Hamilton in Queensland is an "old wealth" suburb on the northern bank of the Brisbane River. It was home to aristocrats and clergy and many mansions were built that still remain. Today it is home to many "professionals".

I think the N.S.W. one might be worth looking at.

Thanks MEgirl. This is starting to get to me. Can the following be co-incidence?
Jane Beveridge, died 1969 NSW, parents Jean and Archibald Beveridge
Jean Davis (nee Beveridge) died 1969 QLD, parents Jean and Archibald Beveridge
????
Really need to follow up on documentation.
Thanks again.

Margaret ...... maybe there were two different informants......... they each registered her death under the names she was known as? Maybe she'd been resident in Qld ...but died in NSW ...(Hospital?)

Wondering if anyone might be able to look up a death or funeral notice for this Jane Beveridge, April 1969, parents Jean and Archibald Beveridge. The death is registered at Hamilton NSW. Maybe this will give me a clue as to whether this was my mother, maybe my name might even be mentioned???

Also Jean Davis (nee Beveridge) April 1969 Ipswich Queensland, parents Jean and Archibald Beveridge.

I don't know which death certificate to apply for.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Margaret

Are these 2 chn's deaths?

14818/1926 BEVERIDGE MARGARET ARCHIBALD D JEAN WAVERLEY
5753/1922 BEVERIDGE JEAN E ARCHIBALD D JEAN ST LEONARDS

fits with:
15070/1969 BEVERIDGE JANE ARCHIBALD JEAN HAMILTON

The Qld Jean does put a spin on things!

Is this Archibald's death?
8700/1957 BEVERIDGE ARCHIBALD D AGED 73 DARLINGHURST SYDNEY

Fits his age on arrival but the deaths of Margaret & Jean confuse me!!!
No wonder you are baffled!

Cherilyn

Cherilyn Report 18 Feb 2011 05:53

Aha!

I think this might be the 1969 Jane's marriage:
12951/1915 BEVERIDGE ANDREW [married] MCLELLAN JANE HAMILTON

Note the reg district.

And here's her birth!
23961/1890 MCLELLAN JANE [father] ARCHIBALD [mother] JANE NEWCASTLE

What a coincidence, eh?!

That means that Qld as Jean is most likely your mum.

Seems Archibald & Jean had another daughter named Jean, who died in 1922, and then your mum was born in 1923!

Cherilyn Report 18 Feb 2011 06:02

Do you have the marriage cert?

6616/1946 BEVERIDGE ARCHIBALD DOUGLAS [married] SOMMERVILLE JEAN RANDWICK

Margaret Report 18 Feb 2011 06:20

Hi Cherilyn,

You have been busy! Thanks for that.
Your first post - yes I believe the deaths in 1922 and 1926 would have been my mother's sisters. Parents Archibald D and Jean (not Archibald and Jane). Glad you sorted that one out for me!
Yes, I have Archibald's death certificate, aged 73, and their marriage certificate from 1946.
Still nothing on Jean Sommerville.

Thanks again,

Margaret

Have found a 1901 Census showing JEANIE SOMMERVILLE aged 9, father Robert Douglas, mother Agnes Russell. My grandfather appears to have assumed the middle name of Douglas, so my thoughts are running along the lines that this could be the Jeanie I am looking for. If so, she is from Wishaw, Lanarkshire, siblings Elizabeth, William, Christina, Robert.
How to prove it??
Any assistance would be really appreciated.
Thanks,
Margaret

You could try following that Jeanie Somerville to see if she surfaces at later date. Look on Scotlandspeople to see if you can find a marriage and death for her. Marriage and death entries in Scotland give the parents names, including the mother's maiden surname. This may either eliminate her or prove that she is still a possibility.

I am sure that you will get to the bottom of it Margaret. The one thing you have to have for this hobby is patience! Eventually you will unravel the truth about Jeanie - may take years though. It took me over 15 years to be sure that I had the correct family for my Grandfather-in-law but good things come to those who wait!
