Can anyone help! new to this. I am trying to find out the names of my grandma's parents, grandma was called Ethel Rogers and was born on 29th September 1899 in Newport, Wales. She married a George Hobbs also born in 1899 who lived in Chepstow. They married in 1920 and on the marriage certificate it gives William Rogers as deceased father (occupation gardener). I can locate my grandad's side of the family but having no luck with my grandma! |

I think you would have to get the birth cert for any more information. |

It is aslo possible Julie, that Ethel is Laura's daughter, born out of Wedlock. |

Thankyou, now this may fit with a birth certificate I got recently it was for a Laura Rogers and she gave birth to Ethel Rogers in September 1899 in the Newport Union Workhouse, but no name of father on the certifiicate, hence that is what has thrown me as on my grandma Ethel's certificate it gave deceased father as William Rogers! and so I thought I had the wrong birth certificate, however maybe not! Do you know if I can find anything out with regard to newport workhouse and if indeed Ethels father was William how could I track his death record? |

Possible for Laura's birth (she says birthplace is Herefordshire on one of the census):- |

Julie I think you may have to accept that the name of William Rogers as her father was made up to 'save face'. |

If the birth in Herefordshire is correct then this could be a possible marriage:- |

Julie, i doubt very much that William Rogers (With the same surname!) is the father of Ethel. The name was more than likely added to the birth certificate to save embarressment. |

Thank you for all your help, it does make sense that Ethel was born illegitimate, but my aunt who is 88 says up to the age of about 10 she used to visit a bakers in Newport and called the owners her grandma and grandad! Sadly my father passed away suddenly following a fall just before Christmas aged 81, and I know from him that his mum Ethel went into the Abergavenny hospital in 1934 with what we now know as Post natal depression, the awful thing about this is that my dads father told the kids that she had died in 1934 when in fact she had not. (this was around the time my aunt was told she would not be visiting her grandparents again at the bakery) My father received a letter late 1980 to say his mother Ethel had died at the hospital aged 81 and you can imagine the shock! sorry to be going on but the mystery now of who the people were in the bakery in Newport is intriguing to say the least, I guess if I could find a marriage that may help, the one from Kath shows a Laura marrying someone from London and not Wales but I guess that could be possible, or if I can locate Laura;s death then the certificate may have some information. All your help is much appreciated. Kind regards Julie |
