I am looking for details of George Bobbett. He was born in 1820 in Wookey, Somerset. His parents were Joseph Bobbett and Honor Shepherd. George was my GGGrandfather. He had a son called George Bobbett who was born in 1845. On George junior's marriage certficate George (b 1820) is shown as deceased. However, I am led to believe he went off to the USA. I can't find George senior on any census returns. Although George junior appears on the 1871 census after his marriage to Amelia Worgan.
I'd be grateful for any help looking for either George. Many thanks.

Thanks everyone for your help so far. This is the information I have: George Bobbett junior was married in 1864 and on his marriage certificate he was 22. He was a printer and living in Queen Street, Bristol. I can see the census you have found for him with Amelia is correct. On his marriage certificate his father is George Bobbett, who is shown as deceased. I did find the birth of a George Bobbett in Wookey and I do wonder if this is the one I'm looking for. I tried looking for George junior's birth but haven't been able to find it.

I'm not familiar with the area so don't know if Wookey comes under Bristol?

Have you seen this (from a Public Member tree on Ancestry (George is compositor in 1901:

"George Bobbett, born in 1842 in South Bedminster, now a suburb of Bristol. He died in 1926 in Hackney, East London.

the earliest record I have found so far has been the 1851 Census when he was living with his Mother in West Hatch, Somerset. Allowing for boundary changes, this is not far from South Bedminster and was at one time, in the same county.

George was a Journeyman Compositor, more commonly known now- a -days as a Type Setter in the printing industry. A Journeyman was someone learning his trade, having served time as an Apprentice. By 1869 He was married to Amelia Worgan, also from Bristol, and living in Bermonsey, South London. Their first son, George was born.

By 1871 They had moved to Hackney and in 1874 their first daughter, Florence was born. They are listed as having 5 children in total, their last child being Albert Edward, my Great Grandfather, who was born in 1882.

On the 1891 Census, George and Amelia are living in 8 Church Road, Hackney.

Why did they move from Bristol to London in the 1860's? possibly because the printing trade was expanding and more people were becoming literate. By the time of his retirement, George Snr was a Compositor."

This is the 1851 census referred to but I don't think it is the correct George as this one is still in West Hatch up until 1891 and is on the 1871 as George Lockyer Bobbett and there is a birth reg for him in Taunton in 1842:

What were the witness names on George juniors marriage, and did it give an occupation for the late george?
