Thanks for looking for me.

I did look through loads of pathfinders records as I can remember my dad saying Joe was in the pathfinders, but haven't found anything I'm wondering if he was just brought up by Frances and David but not their child, or he could have changed his name as a lot of jewish did in the war. David's age is different on the marriage certificate and I've got 2 certificates and the 1911 census all have merchant St but different house numbers

Have you looked for Joseph's death in WWII casualties?

http://www.cwgc.org/debt_of_honour.asp?menuid=14#

The record might give an age, wife/parents' names.

There's no death recorded for a Joseph Cohen RAF.

>> What was Joseph Cohen's mother's surname?? -- Oops, she was Frances Garcia.

I see no Harris Cohen, commercial traveller, in the 1881 1891 1901 censuses. Of the right age, several tailors and a glazier. Surely that household in 1891 is too close on other points to be coincidence.

This is the 1891 Harris's wife Esther in 1901 in Mile End Old Town:

Mads Falber 28
Annie Falber 27 - Annie Cohen
Esther Cohen 56 - born Plotch, Poland
Ray Cohen 19 - Rebecca Cohen

I don't see a death for Harris, but Esther is shown as widow.

Marriages Sep 1918
Cohen David Garcia Mile End 1c 588
Garcia Frances Cohen Mile End 1c 588

Births Sep 1919
Cohen Jenny Garcia Mile End 1C 496
Cohen Sadie Garcia Mile End 1C 496
Births Sep 1927
Cohen xxx Garcia Stepney 1c 303

The 1927 birth was your dad.

There are four Joseph Cohen births with mother Cohen; it wasn't unheard of for a woman to neglect to give her birth surname when she registered a birth (or her husband to do that).

Births Sep 1920
Cohen Joseph Cohen Hackney 1b 827
> Births Mar 1921
COHEN Joseph Cohen Mile End 1c 57
Births Mar 1925
Cohen Joseph D Cohen Hackney 1b 629
Births Sep 1926
Cohen Joseph A Cohen Hackney 1b 527

I might wonder about the 1921 birth in particular.

Thanks for your help

On Louis Marriage certificate Harris's occupation is down as a Commercial traveller Amelia Garcia who married Louis was David Cohen's wife Frances Garcia's aunt. I did send for a birth certificate for Alfred but it was the wrong one, so would need to try again.

Joe Cohen was my dad's brother and I started to look for him in the begining I can't find any birth records he died in the war and was in the RAF.

1891

Name: Louis Cohen
Age: 20
Estimated birth year: abt 1871
Relation: Son
>> Father's name: Harris Cohen
Mother's name: Esther Cohen
>> Where born: Poland

Civil Parish: Mile End Old Town
Ecclesiastical parish: Stepney St Augustine

Harris Cohen 62 - tailor
Esther Cohen 46 - tailoress

What was the occupation of Harris Cohen, on Lewis Cohen's marriage certificate?

JaneyCanuck Report 19 Jan 2011 18:32

I'd suggest you find the birth certificate for David and/or Alfred. Perhaps Alfred in particular, as his birth was the more recent.

This could cost some money, as you might not hit the right one on the first try.

That really seems like the only way you are going to find out who their mother(s) was(were).

It doesn't seem to matter how many times you ask other people to find them in the 1901 census -- presumably you have looked, many other people have looked, no one has succeeded, no one has some secret stash of 1901 census info or magic wand to find people in that census.

I might even suspect something like: David Cohen's mother was Lewis Cohen's previously married first wife, who then died, and so his surname wasn't even Cohen. In which case, it wouldn't likely be possible to find his birth. Unless you could find a previous marriage for a Lewis, sometime 1887ish-1907, where the details (age, occupation, father) matched the details on the marriage to Amelia.

(This is why I'd suggest identifying Alfred's birth first, although there is still no guarantee that he was Lewis's son. Stepchildren were not always identified as such and shown by their true surnames in census households.)

Of course, Lewis's previous marriage, if such there was, could have taken place before he settled in England.

So have you looked at every possible L*is Co*n in 1901?

I'm pretty sure I did.

I don't know what the reference to a Joe Cohen was about. Does it come from this 1901 record, or does this 1901 record possibly relate to info you already have?

Name: Lewis Cohen
Age: 29
Estimated birth year: abt 1872
Relation: Visitor
Where born: Poland, Russia

Civil Parish: Mile End Old Town
Ecclesiastical parish: Christchurch Stepney
Town: Mile End Old Town
County/Island: London

Aaron Nevolsky 29
Elizabeth Nevolsky 30
Zela Nevolsky 6
Myer Nevolsky 15
Fanny Nevolsky 1
Joe Cohen 30 >> tailor (machiner)
Lewis Cohen 29 >> tailor (machiner)

Both are recorded as single, but it's always possible this was an error by the householder or census worker.

mac are you sure it was my thread I thought I posted it a few weeks ago not a few days ago

mac

mac Report 12 Jan 2011 22:44

No Janey, I was looking at Louis as well - so were there 3 threads? It was just a few days ago, and I've never looked for Joe. would have had it in my notes (memory not as good as it used to be, have to write it down!)

Deborah

Deborah Report 12 Jan 2011 22:36

Ok I'll leave this one alone I am sorry for making work for you the original one was for a Joe Cohen. There is quite a few Cohens who seem to have married Garcia in my family. Any help is appreciated sorry once again

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 12 Jan 2011 22:34

Nonsense. There were obviously at least TWO previous threads, because the ones mac and I are talking about are different. One does not delete two threads "in error". And the one I'm talking about was *exactly* the same. How else do you think I recognized this one? Lewis Cohen and Milly Garcia. Hm.

This thread makes *no* mention of all the work done for you in the past, and all the information already available to you and all the trails already followed.

It is entirely your choice whether you continue using this board or not; what an empty (and unoriginal) threat "I'm never using this board again!" is. Who cares?

edit - Maybe the one mac is talking about was Joe Cohen. The one *I* am talking about was Louis (I believe I suggested Lewis, or vice versa) and Milly.

mac

mac Report 12 Jan 2011 22:29

Deborah,

Don't stop trying to find your ancestors, but stop deleting threads - add to them. Ok you say you're new to this, but imagine the time you've spent trying to find your ancestors so far, and think about how much time other people have spent duplicating searches, that is what is so annoying.

I got so much help from "volunteers" on this site that I try to give something back & try to help out now and then, just like everyone on here does.

Nice one Janey!

Deborah

Deborah Report 12 Jan 2011 22:09

I deleted the original thread in error it wasn't the same and I'm sorry if I've wasted your time. I'm new to this and just about got the hang of it now SORRY

mac

mac Report 12 Jan 2011 22:06

We could always request a review, there are rules about duplicate threads - even if they are deleted from our view they still exist! Should I try it?

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 12 Jan 2011 22:03

And carry on breaking the rules and wasting people's time, I'm sure.

Nobody else matters to an awful lot of people. Just themselves.

The one I'm thinking of was more than "the other night" ago, and that one was indeed a waste of my time.
