The only proof of birthplace is on her death cert and it states born Jamaica father Mac Taggart a Planter. The family was from Scotland and Isabella returned to Kirkcudbright for her wedding to John Rigg 10/4/1838. I have this entry. The family then travelled to Australia and I am a direct descendant from their last child Henry Alfred Rigg born 31/3/1859 Donnybrook Melbourne. I would like to find out more about Isabella. I have traced John Rigg back 3 generations in Scotland but cannot find anything more about Isabella.

Appreciate any assistance.

Can anyone help with Isabella McTaggarts parents. Her Death Certificate says Father Mac Taggart Planter (in other words a slave owner).

I think I have been given incorrect information as you have John as the father. The family letter I have received from a very elderly family member has the details from has the father of Herbert Thomas as being the daughter of Isabella born 1845 prior to her marriage to a Haberecht but this looks incorrect and either the birth certificate is false or it was the last born of Isabella and John Rigg. I think you have found something here.

Thankyou

Yes it must be and there is some confusion over the name. The letter writer has since passed away but she was very helpful. Isabella's daughter had a child out of wedlock before she married William Haberecht so now I have found another child to the original Isabella - that now makes 9. My father comes from 16 and I from 7 - we definitely helped populate australia.

They certainly had big families years ago. Did you verify the information that you were given? Quite often things were mixed up between members of the family, (it happened in my family).

I cannot find a death in Victoria, or any children born to Herbert & Mary.

I have had a quick look, but have only found 4 deaths in Victoria. Did some die interestate?

Just a thought, edit your heading to also include Scotland

If you get the details that you require, please do not delete this thread, as there might be other people who are looking for the same person, and could contact you with further information. It also saves researchers duplicating the same information.

Sorry I am new - is it Ok to do that now ?

Verification - most I found at the library in the Digger Pioneer Index 1836-1888. Also another family member checked a lot of the entries for me also but of course as I have found out - family letters, word of mouth etc. are not always correct. Vic BDM's are expensive and I have spent a fortune on these over the years but now retired I have to watch the pennies.

Thankyou very much for your assistance.

Yes you can do it now, just go to your 1st query click on the edit sign, you can then change your heading to include Scotland.

A tree on another site has Isabella as:
ISABELLA CAMPBELL MCTAGGART, born 6/11/1824 Jamaica.
Unfortunately no parents names given but having the middle name of Campbell might help to find her.
Thing is though if she was born 1824 then she would only be 14 when she married John Rigg.
The name Campbell may have been her mother's maiden name, worth a try anyway. Also her parents may have used the scottish naming pattern, so if their first daughter was called Grace, then perhaps Isabella's mother's name was Grace.

Hi Pittsy

Do you have access to Ancestry? If so you can check Slave Registers, which have owners names.

I have found a David McTaggart who has a daughter Isabella Ann McTaggart. The listing is on a slave register dated 1826 in the parish of St Ann in Jamaica.

Another McTaggart listed is James White McTaggart in the parish of St Thomas.

Regards

Catherine

Have you been on to this site? Unfortunately you have to pay $8 for a month's subscription to view records but there was a David Mctaggart who was a plantation owner in St Anns in 1840. There are earlier records for McTaggarts but I can't access them.

James White McTaggart appears to have children or siblings James White and Amey? Their guardian is said to be Ann White.

This is getting very interesting and it is not something I am very proud of in my family history. I have tried chasing the Campbell name with no luck - obviously it is such a common name also but I would think it was definitely her mother's name as this is on the wedding listing also in Scotland. The record says John Rigg of Highbanks and Isabella Campbell McTaggart. Is there anyway of tracing a shipping list from Jamaica to Scotland between 1824-and the wedding 1838 ?

Many thanks to everyone for their help in this matter.

Grace could have been Isabella's mothers name being their first born but John Rigg's mother was Grace Taggart so I have always thought that the first 2 children were named after James Rigg and Grace Taggart who were the parents of John Rigg (isabella's husband). The children of the marriage of John Rigg and Isabella Campbell MacTaggart are Grace, James, Mary, Isabella, John Kerr (Interesting middle name), William Doug, Ann, Charles David Ker (?again), Henry Alfred Wilkinson (my direct line) and Herbert Thomas. Thanks Pittsy
