Firstly I would like to say the message you get explaining how to use the boards when you first click on new topic is really helpful.

I have hit a brick wall with the Campbell's in my family.

I have a Mary Campbell born 1801 Ireland, in Dundlak I think.

Campbell is her married name. I know she was married to Nathaniel Campbell who had died by 1848. As a widower she left Ireland due to the famine and moved her family to Liverpool/. I am not sure when. I assume after 1851 as I can't find them on the 1851 census.

Family history has her down as having 4 daughters (Lucy, Bridget, Catherine and Mary), and 1 son - Nicholas. This is not correct as the 1861 census shows a son called Patrick and a son called James.

Can anyone help me trace the marriage of Mary ? to Nathaniel Campbell in Ireland please, and then the children they had please.

Flick Patrick and James were born in Ireland about 1828 and 1838 respectively
brummiejan, I know her husband is Nathaniel as in a previous search on her for a James Reardon marrying a Bridget Reardon (daughter to the above Mary Campbell) an incredibly helpful person found a record of the marriage and it listed both James Reardon's father and Bridget Campbell's father. See a past post about Reardon for more info on ths.

A written (but inaccuarte) family history has said Mary Campbel left Dundalk during the famine in 1848 as a widow, which is why I think he was dead before 1848, however, I find no trace of the Campbell's on the 1851 census.

Sorry that is a very good point and as her daughter was Bridget Campbell, who married James Reardon and had their own daughter called Bridget, I didnt even notice the name change. Ok so maybe this is not my family, damn!

I do know for definate that Bridget Campbell married James Reardon and Lucy Campbell married Thomas Mulholland, but the other 2 daughters I am stuck on and Mary's maiden name.

Arggghhh, glafd that you saw the very obvious mistake here, but bit gutted now as not closer to finding the family on census records.

I'm interested in how the person you mention found the marriage for Bridget. Maybe if you nudge that thread we can check out what you have?

I take your point Janey but sometimes I find a nudge more useful ie when I'm accessing GR through my phone, I tend to find it hard to copy and paste the link and paste it onto a new page. Victoria...I am a bit confused as to how you are certain Mary was b.Ireland abt 1801posssibly Dundalk and wife of Nathaniel Campbell...Do you have any supporting documentation or is it "Family Heresay" ?
You state that the family history has them with 3 daughters and a son but that is wrong..."but that Lucy definately married a Thomas Mulholland...and Brid a James Rearden" ...Which line are you actually following and a do you have any Certs.?
For ref.Lucy married Thomas Mulholland at St Mary's RC Chapel (Highfield St) L.Pool June 1856 and a Death for a Lucy Mulholland is Reg. L.Pool Sept.1863.

A lot of your 'info' seems to be very doubtful............

BUT.........you should be working backwards.....checking documentary evidence for every step you take............

Start with someone who you absolutely KNOW is your relative.................and get some documentary PROOF

Thanks for all the advice. I am working from a handwritten family document, which admittedly is very jumbled. It us also supported by a hand-drawn family tree which ends at my mum's generation (1946). There are 4 main families and it is all very interwoven. Each one is connected 1 way or another through cousins marrying. Lucy Campbell married Thomas Holland and the dates above fit. She was his 2nd wife & died young soon after the birth of her 2nd child Elizabeth born

Hi Victoria, I know what you mean about jumbled hand-drawn trees! It's easy to end up following a wrong line.

As Erin and Flick both say, you need to determine the hard facts.

You are definite that Lucy and Bridget are sisters and who they married. What relation are they to you?

Sorry doing this via phone & it posted. She died shortly after Elizabeth was born 1862/1863. Elizabeth then died around the age of 6. At the moment I am trying to prove this hand-drawn family tree which is the source of most of my info. It is the handwritten document that states Mary Campbell left Dundalk for Liverpool around 1848 as a widow.

In response to Eringobragh I thought the info was wrong as I misread the 1961 family with Bridget as head, & the 2 son's Patrick and James. According to the tree Mary had 4 daughters - Bridget who married James Reardon, Lucy who married Thom Mulholland, Catherine ? Married a Mr Fennell and Mary? Married a Mr Cunningham. The son was apparently Nicholas who married & settled in Holyhead and had a daughter Ellen who in turn married a Mr Bogue and they had a daughter Eileen.

It is all sketchy so I was trying to prove it and had hoped to find the Campbell's on a census as I am unsure how to access Irish records.

Bridget Campbell and James Reardon would be great great grandparents to me. Maternal line.

Sorry just reread & stupid phone is predicting my spelling. Just to confirm Lucy Campbell married Thomas Mulholland not Holland.

Victoria....I can find no evidence form the Church entry of Lucy's marriage that Thomas M.had been married before...(Usually it lists widow/widower)...also to complicate matters there is a Death Liverpool Reg June 1861 of a Lucy Campbell...given the Christian name was not that common it may be worthwhile checking 1861 Census for a Lucy Campbell....
You may have more success in unravelling the jumble if you let us have childrens names dates etc....

As soon as I am home I will list what I know from the family tree & on computer rather than phone. Thanks for your interest in this.
