What a shame! We can't even look for him on the Commonwealth War Graves site because we don't have a name.

Wendy,

Its looking there was no marriage for Blanche prior to the one in 1931,as Phylis was born under the maiden name of her mother is almost 99.9 that she was born out of wedlock and a copy of her birth certificate will no doubt show her being born to Miss Hayes.

Wendy

Wendy Report 26 Dec 2010 20:09

margaret Mason, yes but because he was already married, and then died,I understand then that it would then be anulled, and she would then have her maiden name back,as had he lived it would have been bigamy

If you have Phillis birth certificate, does it give an address so you could try for an ER look-up to see who was living there when she was born?

MargaretM

MargaretM Report 26 Dec 2010 19:25

But if she married Austin Batchelor using the name Hayes she couldn't have been previously married.

Really really long shot, but if you could find a site with photos of warrant officers in the RGA, you could try matching up your photo?

Also to try and find out if the RGA had any warrant officers, forename Benjamin.

Kucinta

Kucinta Report 26 Dec 2010 18:30

I'm sorry not to be of any help, but there just doesn't seem to be any record of a marriage of Blanche Hayes, bigamous or not, to a man with the first forename Benjamin, at least in England and Wales.

I take it that you have Phyllis's birth cert and that it has no reference to the father - I would have expected her to be indexed under his name as well if there were.

Wendy

Wendy Report 26 Dec 2010 18:24

Wendy

Thanks ,Yes I understand that, but they did marry, but he was already married, but thought his wife had died as she was a nurse in ww1 and both doing there own work ,in those days were seperated and he believed she was dead,so married Blanche ,he died soon after and she reverted to her maiden name, the daughter is Hayes, and it is possible they married after she was born, but they did marry , this is difficult to say the least ,but I am hopeful someone might know something
