Thanks for that Alex. I wonder if she was born FORD? Maybe I should look for her under that surname if she changed back in the later census. |

Thank you for all your hard work Alex. I think the 1891 Lavinia Pope is her. I got really excited thinking I had found her in the 1901 census, but it was a Lavinia A Pope, married to a farmer John G Pope. Very strange all of it because Lavinia isn't that common a name. This one is driving me nuts. Still think I must pay out and get the marriage cert. |

I remember where I found it now. I was searching the 1891 census on genes reunited and I actually found her there. Living by herself, but married and a tailoress. I worked the year of birth out myself but the place of birth was given as St. James, Bristol. |

What leads you to think Lavinia was born in the year/place you quote? |

William Pope was born on the 14th June 1856 in Ledbury Herefordshire. |

I hadn't thought of a different surname. Again this is pointing towards me ordering the marriage cert to see what her father's surname was. I wll have a look at the census too for Lavinia Caroline Lawrence. |

Where and when was William Pope born? |

Thanks for the details. However, they seem to be the only ones I could find (the marriage details). Perhaps I will have to order the marriage certificate to see who her father was. The only family with the name Avens I can find on the census does not include a LAVINIA CAROLINE!! All very strange. I couldn't find a death notice for a Lavinia Avens/Pope either. Don't know if they had any children in the 13 years they were married (well before William Pope re-married in 1900!!). I have tried looking for variations on the name Lavinia and using Caroline as a first name but still zero findings. |

I am trying to find info on a LAVINIA CAROLINE AVENS born in St. James Bristol in 1965. She married my g.grandfather WILLIAM POPE in 1887 16th August - Barton Regis area Gloucestershire. I have found their marriage entry but cannot find her on any census returns. My g.grandfather was in the army at the time of their marriage but based in Gloucestershire. He remarried in 1900 and then lived in Penarth. I can pick him up from then on. I only found out about the first wife because I downloaded his army records and this marriage was mentioned there. I am interested in finding out what happened to her. Any help wold be appreciated. |
