You could vist the Central Library in Sheffield to see who lived at that address

ie in 1925
JAMES C HOLMES (FITTER) lived there

Marriages Sep 1915
Holmes James C Raggett Ecclesall B. 9c 729
Raggett Ada M Holmes Ecclesall B. 9c 729

re late adoption, legal adoptions only became law in late 1920's

It is possible that Emily paid for the Cawthorne's to look after him & they kept her up to date with his progress.
Then asked her permission for his adoption because she now had a family of her own.

The above is based on my own family situation. <<<<<<<<<<

So I would start at that address & see if there is a link
BUT she could just have been a lodger but would a family allow a stranger to give birth there ???

SEE WHO LIVED THERE IN 1916 <<<<<<<<<

If Emily had nowhere else to go, they may have kindly helped
Sadly no NHS in those days, you had to have money to have a midwife/doctor.

ps re my family, it came about that, like now, you need a birth certificate to prove you are old enough to work ( in your Grandad's day it was 14 )
because there was no birth certificate under the surname the person was using ( the foster family's ) they had to tell him he was not their natural son !!

Hi Beverley,
I remember reading on here a while ago that the occupation of dressmaker in those days very often meant that she was in fact a 'Lady of the Night' to put it tactfully! Hopefully I'm wrong, but it may be worth keeping in mind! Hope I haven't offended you with this suggestion - I can assure you that I ( and prob most people ) have found far worse in their background!

Regards Sue

FAIRTHORN

FAIRTHORN Report 30 Nov 2010 01:32

But if as hinted re Emily, a respectable family would NOT have allowed her to give birth in their home !!!

Sharrow Vale Road may be terraced houses but in 1916 it was respectable & the tenants were above working class ie grocers bakers etc.

I have never heard of such a thing, remember most single girls did not put an occupation on the certificate.
Odds are, she supported herself working as a dressmaker which is one of the few occupations a girl could do, as the education in those dates was just basic.as the leaving age was 12.

The other thing you could consider is the father was killed in WW1 as many thousands from Sheffield were.

SCHOOL LEAVING AGE
1870:First compulsory school for younger children
1880: Attendance officers enforce school for 5 to 10 year olds
1899: Leaving age raised to 12
1918: Full-time education compulsory up to 14
1944: Education Act raises leaving age to 15
1964: Raising of school leaving age to 16 announced, but not in place until 1972
