You said Raymond Alain dropped the 'de'. What was your source for this?

Just thinking that if it was post 1911, it would mean by process of elimination that Bertie Maurice was the second child who was deceased by census 1911.

I wonder if either or both Raymond and Bertie also went abroad for their work? Possibly one of them died abroad before 1911?

Thanks for all the info you have found for my mystery family. I think you are right about Edith H being Harolds widow. What was happening in Ireland in the 20's ? Sorry to be a bit dorf!!

Raymond is only Maligny on his baptism record and somewhere along the way Charles has dropped the "de" on some records and Jeanne has dropped hers as well on some - cant remember off hand which ones.

Does Charles get a mention on the 1911 census? How did you know where to look for him in Hong kong .

I dont know who Winifred and Millicent belong to - but I'm sure I find out eventually even if it means getting a birth or death certificate. I'm getting more and more interested in them all.

Can anyone access divorce records and which site are they on?

Irish war of Independence is what was happening...


Looks like Harold died in the Clonbanin Ambush - date is right and the probate record already posted says he died between Buttevant and Kilarney.

Article below from Wikipedia, but you could probably google the incident.


"The Clonbanin Ambush was an ambush carried out by the Irish Republican Army (IRA) on 5 March 1921, during the Irish War of Independence. It took place in the townland of Clonbanin (aka Cloonbannin), County Cork.

The IRA force comprised almost 100 volunteers from counties Cork and Kerry, armed with rifles, hand grenades and a machine gun. Their target was a British Army convoy of three lorries, an armoured car and a touring car carrying Brigadier General Hanway Robert Cumming. The convoy was travelling from Killarney to Buttevant and comprised almost 40 soldiers of the East Lancashire Regiment.

When the convoy entered the ambush position, IRA volunteers opened fire from elevated positions on both sides of the road. The three lorries and touring car were disabled, and the armoured car became stuck in the roadside ditch (although those inside fired from its machine guns). As Cumming jumped from his car, he was shot in the head and died instantly.

The battle lasted slightly over an hour. As the IRA forces withdrew from one side of the road, a British officer and six soldiers attempted to flank the IRA on the other side. After a brief exchange of fire they retreated.

The IRA are not believed to have sustained any casualties."

EDIT: Three soldiers were killed in addition to the Brigadier, so i suspect one of them was Harold.

Didn't readily trace Charles, Bertie or Raymond in census 1911 I'm afraid.

Divorce petition was from the National Archives site which is fairly good for divorce petitions up to c1937 or so, but I don't know if you can find out online if the petition was successful .

Ah well , maybe Bertie or Raymond died before the 1911 census - process of elimination points to one of these two now.

Charles married Jane Elise Van Dyke Mose in 1913 so it cant be him - but where was he in 1911 - maybe back in Hong Kong.

I'm also not too hot on the geography of Ireland but I'll find out.

The article does say the convoy was travelling from Killearney to Buttevant so I think that's the geography taken care of., as the probate said Harold died between Buttevant and Kilarney.

Harold Maligny died in the ambush in Ireland in which Brigadier General Cumming was killed. I think he was probably driving Cumming's car.

I have found the marriage for John and Bridget in Rochdale 1856 but I can find nothing on either of them from BMD's or census records - they just dont appear anywhere.

I found a Michael Dalton b 7th September 1833 to a John and Bridget Dalton in the Liverpool Catholic Baptism records - do you think that Bridget had been married before and that her marriage to John Maligny is a second one? I would appreciate some help with this one please - Maligny or De Maligny is an unusal surname and some of my De Maligny's dropped the " De " later on - Maurice and Marie De Maligny are the first of my rellies born in France in 1836. I dont know what happened to Maurice but Marie died in 1902 in Croydon, Surrey. She lived with her son Emile De Maligny and wife Grace.

Maybe someone could also help in tracing Maurice and Marie in France. I have no record of Maurice living in England and can't find any entry for Marie and son Emile into the uk.. Emile married Grace Bailey in 1876 age 24 in London
