Thank you rutlandbelle, I think he must have been born earlier than that, as as satnav and beejay has found they were married in 1826. He may have married at 15 but that is assuming I have year correct, may be a year or two earlier??

Thelma

Thelma Report 23 Nov 2010 20:03

Hi Victoria
Certifcates can only be bought for marriages after June 1837.
You can find the marriage on Familysearch IGI but even if you can trace a copy of the marriage entry there will not normally be fathers names or occupations

Hi Victoria

The info I gave for the christening and marriage was taken from the St Laurence parish records. As SatNav says, there were no certs before 1837.

Have you considered that as William was christened at the same time as his brother Charles, William may have been older and not a baby as we usually assume.

Don't forget also that ages, particularly on the 1841 census were often rounded down, making him older possibly than the 30 shown

Thank you SatNav.
Bee I had never even considered that! Just assumed they were twins (lots of twins in our family!). I will now look for his birth earlier, you have all been really helpful! Thank you!

Hi Victoria

Bear with me as I'm off to work for a bit now but will get the St Laurence disc out again and look for a burial for William, and anything else I can find

Hi again Victoria

OK, if we're happy that the christening in 1810 is the correct one for your William, here is his parents marriage. All info is again taken from the St Laurence Reading parish registers

17 Oct 1799 Charles Coxhead to Martha Bren
Witnesses George Holmes & Joseph Lay

Christenings for the rest of Charles & Martha's children
23 June 1800 Sarah
14 July 1802 John buried 22 June 1809
6 Jan 1807 James buried 25 April 1807
2 Sept 1812 Bathsheba
10 Aug 1815 Thomas
6 April 1817 Martha
19 May 1819 James
For all the christenings they are living in West Street and Charles is a shoemaker.

I have a burial for Charles Coxhead
1 July 1847 aged 80 living in the Union Poor House, which makes his birth around 1767

I'll have a look for a christening for him and see if I can take youback further with his parents

Now for your William

Banns were to be read for his marriage to Ann Newbery in December 1825, but the entry in the parish register reads
"Dec 1825 William Coxhead/Ann Newbery - stopped by the above William Coxhead according to the request of his father, he being a Minor (2 readings, entry deleted)
so he was obviously under age then and didn't have his fathers blessing

I've found him on the 1841, 1851 and 1861 censuses, and on the 1861 he seems to be living with his daughter Rachael in Kingston Surrey. The birth years on each one are different, so in 1841 he was born in 1811, on 1851 in 1808 and 1861 in 1806, so he's obviously not sure when he was actually born.
Hope I haven't confused you too much with all this, tomorrow I'll look for christenings for his children.

By the way, I've found a marriage for a Charles Coxhead but I've no way of knowing whether he's yours

24 Dec 1830 Charles Coxhead to Elizabeth Restel
Witnesses William Murray & Mary Carter

Hope you can make sense of all this

Bee

Oh my goodness! Thank you so much! You have worked so hard for me and am ever so grateful! This is so exciting finding things out like the marriage being stopped at his fathers request. So does that mean they were never married?? Hate to be asking you questions when you have already been so helpful. Look forward to hearing from you again!

Vicky.
