Find Ancestors

Hi Folks,

Quick question...I have a relative born in 1864 in Shoreditch.
But there are 2 people with the same name in the same place in the same year!.

Is there anyone to find out which one of the two gro numbers is the one I want?

I do recall someone saying you can phone the GRO office and they would check for you....but is this true?

Unfortunately the parents of the 2 ladies in question may also have the same names!

eg BOTH sets of parents have exactly the same names...fore and surmane...Crazy i know...but It could be such.....The only way to truely find out is to buy the other cert and I have purchased one...but dont want to waste money buying a second if it isnt her.

Dispite purchasing one of the certs...i still cant be sure that I have the right one as the parents names MAYBE exactly the same...

Have you compared the fathers' occupations?

Her name is Emma Tuck..born Shoreditch 1864.

But there are 2 entries.

I have just purchased 1c 184 which arrrived yesterday.

Her parents names are John Tuck & Caroline.

Now..I had it as John Adolphus Tuck & Caroline Mc Carthy
As John is the only John Tuck born in Paddington c1822...as stated on the census returns for Emma.

I was told by lady that John Adolphus Tuck was NOT my Emma's father.
But he is the only John born in the right place and at the right time and also married a Caroline....one Caroline McCarthy!.

This means John Adolphus Tuck & Caroline Mc Carthy had a daughter Emma...and my Emma had parents John Tuck & Caroline...

But thsi lady says they are not the same John & Caroline.

The birth cert i purchased says, John Tuck & Caroline McCarthy...formerly Cook.

BUT.....are thses aprents one and the same as the other Emma's?....or they are two separate family sharing the exact same names, dates and places?

The only way to say for sure is to buy the other cert 1c 178...but i dont want to waste money buying it....if the parents are not John & Caroline...i just can't aford to waste the money.

I am hoping that what i was told that if i phoned the GRO office they could check to see if both the certs have the same named parents or not.
If not...then i have it right...but if the parents names ARE the same...then i am still no nearer knowing who Emmas parents are.

Johns occupations varies greatly, on cert hes a Drayman..and on the census returns he is Ex navy pensioner, and a Waterman, and a licenced Viculator AND a tailor.

So..cant really compare

Buy the lady's marriage cert, to find out what she says on that about her father's occupation

And compare the occupations of BOTH fathers on the census returns.................

I would suggest the 'tailor' should probably be 'sailor'.....Tailor is a skilled profession....not something taken up and dropped on a whim.

I have Emmas marriage cert.....and it looks like it says "Tailor".

The husbands fathers Occ is Shipwirght.......If it is Sailor and not Tailor....
Then the S in Shipwright and that of Sailor would look the same...but they don't..they are completely different....it does look like a T not an S.

Shes not registered in Portsmouth....there are no gro's for an Emma Tuck in Portsmouth 1864.

Her brother William was born in Portsmouth..in 1870...Sister Caroline was born in Portsmouth..1858, brother Henry, Kingsland (which is Shorditch) 1859, sister Elizabeth, Shorditch 1862, sister Charlotte Shoreditch, 1862

Is this the marriage you have for John Tuck and Caroline McCarthy? No mention of Adolphus.

I am trying to find my doc's..but Ancestry is playing up and I have lost a HD lately which i believe had alot of my genealogy work on it.

I was hoping for a simple answer to simple question of whether the GRo office would check the other cert for me to make sure i had the right one.
Wasnt expecting to have to go through the whys and where fores!..lol.

I need to find the lady i spoke to about John Adolphus Tuck..He was her relative and as far as i can recall ..married a Caroline McCarthy.
But she said that my John & Caroline were not the same people as hers....

I cant recall how I conversed with her, whether by here or via email.....was sometime ago.....
I walso was conversing with a guy who also had John A Tuck & Caroline McCarthey....but i cant find his contact details eithers.

Paul- when you said that you have the marriage certificate, is this the original and not a copy.? . My reasoning is that the person copying may have read it wrong. ....it did happen to me on my copy marriage cert in that the person copying changed the 'pastor' into a 'father' so if it is a copy I would be more in agreement about his being a sailor than a tailor.-Jle

To answer your original question, I don't think the GRO will answer any questions but the local Register Office might.
