Thanks Lesley, I'll follow up on Keighley as adopted son - could be a lead. Think I've got to accept Keiley not correct spelling - he must have just adopted this when he went to sea in 1904. Tenuous links to Gloucester but this Albert is linked to Oldham and I know he was married there,

Thanks everyone

There are no births for Albert Keiley apart from his son in 1909.

So either Keiley was not his name or he was not born in England or Wales

Thanks Jax. Don't think thats him. The extra info I'd added to the deleted thread was that he married Alice Bell in Oldham 1908 and that a link to Gloucester has been unearthed - he was on a ship in 1904 and place of birth stated as Gloucester.

Is it possible to locate the census entries for workhouses by name of the institution or do you have to search for a name and then discover they were an inmate of a poorhouse?

Sorry, I thought original thread was too long ago - I gave up after the last failed attempt 12months ago and am just starting up again.
Thanks anyway

Trouble is James could well be a made up name and occupation.
I know I spent ages looking for a father that was mentioned on my gt grandmothers marriage cert. Then I found her birth in an unmarried mothers home, so giving a name did'nt look as bad as "unknown"

doesn't say deceased on marriage cert although from what I can gather father wasn't around for most of Albert's life so could have been deceased.
I have found 2 references to Albert Keiley crewing ships in 1903 & 1904. One of these refers to place of birth as Gloucester circa 1885 - I had heard that Gloucester figured somewhere in Alberts past - a bit more info but still no further on.

Was James still alive at the time of the wedding or is he down as deceased?

Freda Report 13 Nov 2010 17:49

Don't really know - was hoping for other clues I suppose. someone last night suggested need to look at family relationships that were not visible on freesearch. I am aware that I am clutching at straws and was hoping if I could view the original entry all would become clear! Back to the drawing board then.
Also wasn't aware that don't see original entry on Genes

jax

jax Report 13 Nov 2010 17:43

Platinum will give you the 1911 but you will not see the origanals on Genes as You have been given the census what else are you expecting to see?

I've spoken to mum and Albert Keiley brought his family to Liverpool around this time. They went in to lodgings in Upper Pitt Street! I have gold membership with Genes Reunited and have been fighting against upgrading to Platinum just to see the 1911 census however curiosity has won and I am either going to upgrade or buy credits on another site - 1911 census seems to hold only info on this little family and hope it can give me more clues to Alberts past.
Thanks to everyone who has taken the time to help me on this.

jax Report 13 Nov 2010 01:48

Those Keeley's must be them as there is no Alice Keeley born at that time but as you said this one was born 1911 and census says less than 1 year
