Hello again researchers as I am at this moment in time going through a very difficult time I am unable to put all my efforts into my quest my reasons for my providing the information to you all is to help you with your searches .
I have noticed a comment that there is no record of my great grandfather marrying the reason for this would likely be that he never married my great Grandmother this I believe to be a fact !
I can also add what my father ( now deceased Jan 10th 1976 ) believed was that his grandfather originated from Stirling that may have been his Great Grandfather he always said we carried Scottish blood , this as I'm sure you will know Tennant is a Scottish clan who I believe Lord Glenconner is a member of .
I hope one day to go into this with vigore , please get intouch if I can help further .
One more thing I can rember is that I believe my Grandfather had I believe an Aunty / sister who was to do with Tennants shoes of Southport who lived & died in Birkdale .

That's who the "other" John Tennant married (the one that's on the 1911 with Samuel & Agnes - I'm trying to find out who he really is).

Mark - are you happy for us to help Alan on this thread seeing as there appears to be a connection?

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 30 Jan 2014 12:40

Alan, if your grandfather was a master joiner then it was likely that he was the John Tennant born in Southport who appears not to be the natural son of Samuel Tennant (see my comments above) - that's if we are following the right family.

You have question marks for your father's mother's name - have you looked up his birth on a site such as FreeBMD? http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl - if he was born after 1911 then it will show his mother's maiden name.

Then find the marriage between his father and mother using the combination of surnames.

If your father is still alive then we shouldn't post details on here (this isn't a secure site so details of living people are a no-no).

That's the way to work back with accuracy and it's always necessary to order a few certificates along the way - we can explain how to do that when the correct records have been found.

pms from Alan (have explained about "Add Reply"):

"Hello Marie in answer to your question My Grandfather was indeed a master carpenter/joiner. As in those days it was I believe comon to name siblings after the names of their parents this may be the reason one of my Aunties was named Agnes!
My fathers name was Lawrence , his Mother ????? Picthall Tennant my real Grandmother died when my father was a boy of 11 a fact that troubled him for the rest of his life !
Thank you for getting in touch , as I'm new to this and that this is my first venture into my past so to speak information & advice would be most welcome & appreciated also if I can be of help to anyone out there please don't hesitate to ask , best regards Alan T."

"Very interesting , I know for a fact that my Grandfather had a brother / sister who were the owners of Tennant,s shoes of Southport .
Of further interest in talking to my mother on this subject they hailed from Burscough and are believed to be interred in the churchyard there ."

Normally, I'd suggest that Alan start a new thread of his own but seeing as there seems to be a direct connection I hope Mark doesn't mind me adding to it....

It's just that I've noticed on the 1911 census posted on page 1 that there are TWO sons called John Tennant born a year apart:

TENNANT, John Son Single M 16 1895 House Joiner's Apprentice Lancs Southport
TENNANT, John Son Single M 15 1896 Engineer's Apprentice Lancs Lpool

I've checked the census image and there's no mis-transcription. I wondered if one of the John's might be Agnes' son from a previous relationship but on the image it's stated she'd given birth to 1 child, and 1 child had died.

Alan, is one of these John Tennant's the grandfather you refer to and, if so, which one?

mark,

With the not so common surname a phone call may do the trick, they may be kind enough to do you a lookup circa 1870/71.
