snap i was thinking along those lines .

but if she was born Hodge wouldn't she have been married as a Rimmer.

Maybe Alice and Rachel were sisters.
Family members could possibley be remembering the name Rimmer.

ValT Report 4 Nov 2010 23:49

I think this marriage shows that Rachel was a Hodge.
Marriages Jun 1880
Fenna Arthur Ormskirk 8b 1022
Hodge Mary Ormskirk 8b 1022

On the 1881 census Rachel is 2 and down as Arthur's niece.
Therefore Mary was Rachel's sister.

Solved it......

Rachel was Alice's child.

RACHEL HODGE
Birth:
Christening:
06 APR 1879 Aughton By Ormskirk, Lancashire, England

Parents:
Mother: ALICE HODGE

therefore she would have been Mary's niece and would have gone by the name Rimmer. She married with the name Hodge as this was on her birth certificate.
Don't know if Mr Rimmer was her dad.

I did ask why you had decided against the Hodge Pye marriage you were given on the other thread .at the beginning of this one ?

Just found this
The difference between a "base child of" and "illegitimte" according to Ancestry.co.uk is that "base" is the child of a single woman and "illegitimate" is a child born to an unmarried couple.

When Alice married Rimmer Rachel's name became Rimmer but when she married she used her birth name Hodge.

Jayne Report 5 Nov 2010 00:30

Wasnt Alice;s sister Mary a Fenna ????

 Lindsey*

Lindsey* Report 5 Nov 2010 00:44

Yes 1881Rachel was with her auntie Mary Fenna, see the census I put on page 1 aged 2 years.

on the next census 1891 thats the one with the bad spelling Kimmer, Alice has married John Rimmer and she is then living with her mum and is called Rachel Rimmer, see page 1.

This was normal practice when mothers married to change their young children,s surnames

Please don,t delete this thread like you did with the others, or people will get cross repeating their research.
