Hi. Gladys and Kathleen dont ring any bells. All very mysterious! Have spoken to S-in-law - she thinks Austin E Lawley was in Durham Light Infantry. She is also finding birth certs etc for address information

Hi His occupation is listed as Health Visitor on Edna's (my M-in-Law) marriage cert
Will find out addresses

K

K Report 26 Oct 2010 05:56

Based on Hilda's age of 20 when she died in 1918 the Hilda in 1901 and 1911 must be be same person and her birth matches

Births Mar 1898 (>99%)
Hopkin Hilda Blything 4a 989

I would think that the Newark marriage could well be the Hilda Maud below,

Surname First name(s) District Vol Page
Births Mar 1889 (>99%)
Hopkin Hilda Maud E. Retford 7b 2

Austin Lawley seems completely illusive, I can see a possible candidate on the irish or english census and there appear to be no BMD records relatimg to him.

Any other detials about him would be very useful - ie his occupation on both Hilda's birth cert and her marriage and addresses at the time of Hilda's birth.

I have been searching again, I can only find one Hilda Hopkin on each of the 1901 and 1911 census

and I keep coming up with this marriage, this would only make her 15 when she married if it is her, the area seems wrong, and the spouses name isn't right but it might be worth getting this cert to see

England & Wales, FreeBMD Marriage Index: 1837-1915
about Hilda M Hopkin Name: Hilda M Hopkin
Year of Registration: 1913
Quarter of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar
Spouse's Surname: Bown
District: Newark
County: Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire
Volume: 7b
Page: 824

spouse's name is

Name: John E Bown
Year of Registration: 1913
Quarter of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar
Spouse's Surname: Hopkin
District: Newark

it's a long shot but, I wonder if he became Austin Edward Lawley??

do the names Gladys and Kathleen mean anything?

do you actually have Hilda's memoriam card?

what does it say?

Michelle

Michelle Report 25 Oct 2010 20:02

Hi, Yes mother in law's marriage certificate named him as her father, have yet to see a copy of her birth cert.

I think it might be worth ordering Hilda's death cert or your Mother in Law's birth certs, if you don't actually have them, just to see if Austin is named on them, or if he was the informant and to check spelling.

Your Mother in Law's marriage cert may be useful too
