I couldn't find births for Susanna(h) nor William Edward under Adams, so I went looking for a William Edward birth (no surname)
I found the following one for William Edward Bultitude
Births Sep 1876 (>99%) BULTITUDE William Edward Yarmouth 4b 21
then I looked for Bultitude born 1873 +/ 10 years and found this 1881 Census
1881 Census
Name: James E. Bultitude Age: 15 Estimated birth year: abt 1866 Relation: Son Father's name: James Bultitude Mother's name: Frances Bultitude Gender: Male Where born: Woolwich, Kent, England Civil Parish: Great Yarmouth County/Island: Norfolk Country: England Street address: Victoria Street Francis Buildings
Occupation: Porter Grocers Registration district: Yarmouth Sub-registration district: Yarmouth Northern
James Bultitude 43 b.ca 1838, Yarmouth, House Painter Frances Bultitude 37 b.ca 1844, Yarmouth Agnes Bultitude 17 b.ca 1864, Yarmouth James E. Bultitude 15 Mary A. Bultitude 11 b.ca 1870, Yarmouth, Scholar Susannah Bultitude 2 b.ca 1879, Yarmouth William Bultitude 5 b.ca 1876, Yarmouth, Scholar
Then I went looking for a marriage, and found this one ............... suspicious eh!
Marriages Dec 1859 (>99%) Boyce Frances Newstead Yarmouth 4b 5 Boyce Frances Newsted Yarmouth 4b 5 Bultitude James Adam Yarmouth 4b 5
Could Adam have been his middle name, and he just dropped his surname for some reason???????

I wonder if this is Charles Brown, age 4 on that 1851 Census
It's from a Public Family Tree on ancestry. It says his father is William Bultitude (d. 1842), no name for mother. His siblings are shown as George Bultitude (1835 – ) and James Bultitude (1837 – ), and one of his children is called James Brown Bultittude
Charles William Bultitude Birth 18/5/1847 Blundeston Suffolk England
Death 6/5/1888 Sunderland, Durham, England
gawd this is a family and a half!!!!

Omg I think you have found the bultitude part! my great aunt insists that the family name was a hyphenated one being bultitude-Adams but that as bultitude was German and Adams was Jewish, the bultitude part was dropped.
I think you've found when this happened. amazing!

So it looks like the name never was double barrelled one and that they used James middle name Adam to drop the bultitude part then. That is fascinating. I wonder why though, could this have been a census error?
It looks like the change happened between 1881 and 1891.

Ok, just gone to add on my tree and I'm really confused. So James (abt 1838) brother was George (abt 1835) and James Browne (abt 1812) was his father who married Susan Bultitude. But why does it then say son in law?
or had Susan married previously to a Mr Bultitude who died and she then married James Browne hence why there are older Bultitude children and a younger Browne child.
Charles William Bultitude wouldn't be old enough to be the father and Susan's father was Bultitude?
Okay now I an very confused :-D

Ruth
James and George were the children of Susan Bultitude
Susan Bultitude later married James Brown(e), and the boys became his step-children ..... only in those days they were more commonly called sons-in-law (or daughters-in-law, of course!).
So far as I can see ............... Susan was not married when she had the children .... she does say that John Bultitude was her father's name on that marriage information from beta.familysearch.org
but that may change if we do more digging in the parish registers.
I did have a look for the baptisms of James and George last night, but didn't see anything.
I do quite honestly think your great aunt has got the "facts" wrong.
Bultitude seems to be a name that was around in parts of England from at least 1800 ....... and it does not sound in the slightest German to me!
and I doubt that Adams is necessarily a Jewish name either!
It may well be impossible to determine why the Bultitude name was dropped ..................... it could be due to all kinds of things.
even something as simple as it was too difficult to spell correctly, especially when many people were illiterate!

I quite agree with you. We just couldn't work it out but the marriage and the name James Adam Bultitude kind of gives the big clue.
