I (person) looked Asselin up at - http://www.mytelus.com/phonebook/display.do

I can see one in Duncan, but there's also one in Lake Cowichan, just 20km inland.

Have written to Canada to the only person I can find called Asselin in Duncan, address must be wrong but put another address on the back, had the letter returned person not at this address.

Sent for a birth certificate for a Douglas Webb as this was what George said was his middle name. His birth was registered as Douglas, correct date, mother Emily Adelaide Webb, only 2 of these and have finally found the true mother and her family. All the names in this family fit in and now am satisfied and know the family history for a few generations.

Have not found him on a ship to Canada.

Thanks for all your help, been a long journey but great success, would love to find family in Canada maybe in the future I will find them.

We think Charlotte possibly married someone called Asselin it is in the Drouin Collection but no initials can be seen. She died in Duncan BC in 1990. We think there is some family there but only one person at that district will have to put pen to paper, finding a tactful way of asking if they are related

No sign yet of the brother Albert Edward may make that my search for the day.

Dear mgnv, good to hear from you again. Do you remember you found me out about Charlotte's family history in Sunderland, was ploughing through all the paperwork today.

Charlotte juniors second name was Kirby, from your findings I was able to know we had the correct one because her grandmother's maiden name was Kirby.

I think I can find Xavier a few census back, he was always a Cultivator, even found a baby in another section with this name must be one of those family names. I could not write and ask because it was someone's obitiary and he was a great grandson, did not seem tactful.

Montmagny is 70km downstream from Quebec City, on the S Shore.
In 1891/1901/11, Xavier is a cultivateur (i.e., farmer) - I'm not familiar with Quebec rural addresses - sorry.

Had another reply from Canada today, George and Charlotte had a least 2 children, Albert Edward born 1917, and Charlotte born 1918. So there may be family still in Canada, what a surprise for the English family.

Hi Margaret, she married George on August 5th 1942 and was 31 so she must have been born after the census. Thanks for the census, this gives me a lot of names to look for on family trees.

Hi anyone still out there but had some brilliant paperwork today from Canada. Only asked in Quebec web site if they could tell me where George was buried. They have not answered that but sent me some info I did not have. I thought they were going to send me forms to fill in.

First of all Janey there is the second marriage to Juliette and one of the witnesses was John George Webb, you said all along that he may have had a child, Charlotte's relative was a John. The only thing is that I have also received the details of the divorce and it appears that the innocent party was George, Charlotte is cited as having an affair which was proved. Hope the child is George's funny he never talked about a child, or it may be that he went over with some Webbs and this is their relative.

Juliette's name was Letourneau father was I think Xavier as farmer deceased, mother Rosalie also deceased. The marriage was one year after the divorce 7th August 1942. He states his name is George Douglas Webb, father same name deceased, but cannot find either of these on BMD. He says is a chauffeur mechanic. Mother Emily deceased

He died 22nd February 1963. There are various addresses on the paperwork which I will ask mgnv if he can find any of them for me when I get my head around this brilliant paperwork to see if he can find me a census.

Going to have to write a long thank you letter to the lady that has sent me the info, may even try my poor French on her, hope she does not laugh too much by it.

Still plodding my way through the ships manifest of people going to Canada not found him yet but plenty to go at. Wish I was on Find my past that could make it easier for me. Found yesterday many home children some as young as 7 upset me so shut it down. What on earth, apart from money, did those in charge of orphanages think they were doing with such young ones.

Trying to print out some of what you have found but having difficulties but will keep on trying. I need to print it out to get my head around things and type them up.

Spoke to brother in law this weekend, his uncle did have scars on the side of his face so now know for certain that we have researched the correct soldier.

I was told he had no children, am sure he would have said if he had. He always told the sister he wrote to in England, when anything happens to me you will be provided for. He would not have said that if he had children, unfortunately no money ever came to them. So maybe there was no money or he left it to Juliette.

We will be looking into his serivce in France found a direct website to it for Engineers and Railway man.

Had a few replies to my request for Charlotte Thoburn, the ones in England either did not know she had gone abroad or the one that did was not aware of when she went. Told how to get onto this site and read all that you have found.

The ones in Canada already have never heard of Charlotte in their tree, thedir relatives had been in the country for much longer. So why the mother came and who she lived with may be possible to find. got to go our talk later

Well this has been quite a feat and pretty successful team effort, hasn't it?!

The remaining question is whether he had children and how to find them?

Re service in France - it's true his record wouldn't say where in France he served, but it would say what unit he was with, and the attestation search help link you're familiar with also has a link to unit War Diaries - most are online, and these say where his unit is on a day by day basis.

Hello everyone, had 2 replies from Genes re Charlotte, one said it was only a distant relative and the other knew of her mother's twice marriage but not that she had gone to Canada, I think this person lives in England, that was this morning. This afternoon she had been in touch with a Canadian cousin and had sight of the marriage cert, I asked if there were any photos in the family but not building my hopes up it was another branch of the family.

Had a reply from Railways in Canada and have to notify them his details and see if anything turns up, thought it would be weeks before I heard not next day.

Also had a reply from army contact, George was in the reserves part time before the war as a volunteeer, there would be no paperwork. She gave me the dates that we already know of his joining up, he was discharged April 1916 as medically unfit. He joined again Nov. 1916 and was discharged Jan. 1917

He died 21st Feb. 1963 in Ville St. Martin Quebec. - I presume they know this because he may have had a pension.

I am going to let the family apply for his papers if they want them, which I hope they do, there are 25 - 75 pages, according to this lady depending on what service they had. The papers tell of when he was in England and where but if he was abroad it would say France not the district.

It was a lovely letter. Any worries I had about this being the correct soldier has been dispelled, the death date is when the family thought he died and I am quite happy today.

He would have worked on either CNR (Canadian National Railway) or CPR (Canadian Pacific Railway). If you google them you'll find histories, I'm sure. It's all amalgamated now, but was separate at the time. Both went cross-country and down into southern Ontario, for instance. Montreal has always been a major rail hub.

If he was here in 1911, he may even have been off tooting around the country on a train on census night.

I doubt there would be personnel records at this date, however.

I cannot claim credit for this I have met on line a very very distant relative of a relative of the family I am looking for and she is a genius. Sometimes in life you are lucky so my persistance over 2 years finally paid off with her.

Right Thoburn - I am going to read what you have found and then of course contact them, that is how I met my helper. I did look for a marriage in this country and drew a blank. I know the name of Thorburn in this country but not Thoburn but as most people could not read and write it depended on who the cleric was.
Tried to look up Montreal railways and an email address and all I can see is an electric railway, you do not need a stoker or fireman for that.so from your extensive knowlege was there a steam train also and do you know if there is anyone who would know if they kept names of employees. Had a bit of luck in my search for my husband's grandfathers railway history in England.

Going to get in touch with Thoburns and then reread all you and everyone else is finding.

I'd be pretty sure Chauffer on his papers is his spelling of Chauffeur.

But my goodness, you're right. "Chauffeur" has a second meaning in French. The primary meaning is "driver", but it's also:

gen: stoker (of boiler)
Rail: fireman

Very clever, you!

And of course the fireman and engineer likely both refer to railway work; I should have thought of that, since my gr-grf who immigrated to Canada was a railway fireman. ;)

So that links him all up, doesn't it?


Now how bout those Thoburn connections I found here at GR?

You'll probably have the luck I had when contacting cousins in lines of my families who remained in England when my gr-grparents on one side and gr-parents on the other immigrated to Canada: "Who?" ;) Once you emigrate, yer gone; out of sight, out of mind!

Hi Janey can I pass this thought to you, George on his marriage was a fireman, on his 1st attestation he was an engineer on his 2nd attestation he was a chauffer, apart from the fact that he could be multi tasking, a thing we woman are good at, my friend has suggested that possibly he could have worked on the railway as Fireman/Engineer/Chauffer, is this last word the name of a stoker in french please?
