Hi rootgatherer, According to Anns DC the poorhouse was in Glasgow it would have been nice to think her children were visiting her when they were in Edinburgh and would have told us why they were there. As I said I am going to look at the poorhouse application in the Mitchell on Tue night (I am starting a 6 week course on Family History) I will post my findings. Thanks for all your help and advice. Linda

Linda, Ann was almost certainly in the poor house because she was ill. At that time most ordinary people couldn't afford the services of the medical profession so if they had a long term illness they often ended up in the poorhouse. As has already been said, poor relief applications can often give quite a bit of detail and you may be able, from the application to verify that her children were indeed visiting in Edinburgh. It may even tell you if it was relatives that they were with.

Looks like Bakers have been running through the Brodie genes.
This is as far back as I've found for your Brodie ancestors. James Brodie and his wife Janet Purves in the 1841 census.

This might be a possible christening for her.
Janet Purves 18th June 1791 Innerwick, East Lothian
Father: Robert Purves Mother: Agnes Underwood
I can't find a marriage for Robert and Agnes... but this might be Agnes' death:
Scotlandspeople: Old Parish Registers: Deaths and Burials Only 1 match coming up for these names.
Agnes Purves / Underwood (cross-ref names) 1820 County: East Lothian Parish: North Berwick
Added all the info under one post as it might be easier to keep track of.

Hi Helen , I am really interested in seeing what you have discovered dont mind you posting it . I want to thank everyone for all their help especially yourself and Catherine. Catherine it was a stroke of genius how you found my GG John on the census I would never have thought of going down that avenue. I will post my findings re Ann after I have ben to the Mitchell on Tue night. Just out of interest as I said I am really new to this but I managed to find my other GG who had disappeared also (what is it with my family) found he was put into Quarriers and sent to Canada got loads of info from Quarriers re him. So if I can do it anyone can (alright up to a point till you get stuck like I did) The GG you have helped me find was married 2 had 9 children and was a treasurer for the union of bakers and confetioners when he died a lot of the union ppl and the then Lord Provost of Glasgow were at his funeral. As you will understand it is really great to fill in the missing bits re his life. I would just love to find out if the Fergusons were his paternal family. will stay logged on I really love how everyone on this board has been so helpful I know how much time it takes to find everything.

I agree with you. None of these census appear to be your Ann.
I've been having a look further back into your family research based on the latest information you sent on the Brodie family. I've found bits and pieces which I'm happy to post if you want.
I won't add it now just in case you want to try searching it out yourself.

Linda,
Your research is fairly moving on !
What a lucky find in tracing Ann in the Poor Law records. Some are more informative than others but sometimes you can find out loads of extra information that you won’t find anywhere else. I’ve a good few of my own ancestors listed and have built up quite a sense of the person and their circumstances at the time.
You say you found Robert in the 1861 census … registered as married. Maybe Ann might be found in Barnhill Poorhouse (or at another address) at the time of the 1861 census registered under her maiden name of Clark.
Hopefully when you read up on her, the information may begin to explain why she went to Barnhill in the first place and why she was still there three years later. She may even have came out in the intervening years and returned there just prior to her death. This happened in the case of my own GGG Grandmother.

I really appreciate everyones help here I am (obviously) new to this only started 2 months ago! Helen while I was waiting on your reply to my missing post I didnt waste time I contacted the Mitchell Library who have confirmed that it is Ann in the poorhouse!!! Over the phone could only confirm her full name is Ann Thomson Clark aged 52 years DOB 1809 from Dunfermline and that the date of application was 1861. I have asked to see the original application and am going into the Mitchell on tues 26/10 so will update you then. i cannot believe how much further forward I have got in my search thanks to everone I would never have found this on my own.

Linda,
My thoughts are the Robert Brodie you found born in North Berwick and the Robert who registers Haddington, Berwick on the census records are one and the same person.
Robert Brodie - International Genealogical Index Gender: Male Birth: 04 APR 1812 North Berwick, East Lothian, Scotland
Haddington is about 10miles from North Berwick and possibly although the baptisms were registered in the main church of the time ... in North Berwick, possibly Robert actually lived in Haddington and so puts Haddington as his place of birth on the census return.
I also think the Robert Brodie Catherine found in the 1861 census is the correct person. Same birth year and place of birth.
Don't know why his wife, Ann, is not with him. It would be interesting to see the original census image to see if Robert is calling himself a widower or still married at this time. You could download this image from Scotlandspeople if you choose ... or you could find this census image at the Mitchell Library for free. You already have the address (204 Holm St) and so, the image would be easy to find on the 1861 roll of film.

Hi Helen and Catherine, I thought I was determined but I have learned how addictive this family history is. thanks for all the help you are giving me. James Brodies marr in St Andrews Edinburgh 1867 states his father as Robert Brodie - commercial traveller and mother as Ann Thomson Brodie MS Clark (dec) His DC in 1889 in Moulin Perth states same parents but both are dec. i have the census for 1861 where it shows James and Isabella in Edinburgh she was born in Sunderland England as posted earlier I have got a copy of her BC and the parents are Robert and Ann. I cant find Robert or Ann in 1861 census I still have some credits left for SP if you can think of anything I can check to help us out. Re Robert Brodie his death cert in 1885 Dunfermline Fife states his parents as James Brodie and Janet Brodie MS Purvis using this info I found their MC 24/8/1810 and his (as I thought BC in the parish of Norh Berwick on 4/4 1812. What do yo both think am I on the right track or is it the one in Haddington that i cant find. Sorry it took me so long to reply but I was searching SP with no luck also got e-mail from the cousin in USA she got John Brodies DOB from her mums (his daughter) photo album. I think I'm getting more confused1

Thanks Catherine,
I was trying to determine if Ann Brodie was still alive at this point.
She may well have been ... but living separately from Robert. (Longshot guess: Maybe under her maiden name of Clark.)
That 1861 census could be Robert Brodie ... commercial traveller .... as recorded before.
It's a pity Ancestry don't record whether the person is a Widower or Married.
Linda would have to download the original image from Scotlandspeople in order to find this information.
Unfortunately it's a costly business.

I think this is Robert in 1861.
Name: Robert Brodie Age: 45 Estimated birth year: abt 1816 Relationship: Lodger Gender: Male Where born: North Berwick, Haddington Registration Number: 644/6 Registration district: Blythswood Civil parish: Glasgow Barony County: Lanarkshire Address: 204 Holm Street Occupation: Traveller For Printing ED: 12 Household schedule number: 6 Line: 15 Roll: CSSCT1861_105 Household Members: Name Age Sarah McConnick 30 Robert Griesson 22 Elizabeth Greerson 18 David Cruthers 17 Robert Brodie 45 Alexander Drummond 30
The last I see Ann is 1851 with the children and I think her brother. In 1861 it looks like the children are in Edinburgh as visitors (not 100%).

James Brodie's mother (recorded as Ann Thomson Clark) was deceased when he married Jane Blair in 1867.
Linda I agree with Helen that the death in 1864 was probably the mother. You can search the Poorhouse records at the Mitchell Library in Glasgow.
Robert Brodie name is incorrectly transcribed on Ancestry and he is listed as father in law. But here it is:
Roblia Brodie Age: 58 Estimated birth year: abt 1813 Relationship: Father-in-Law Gender: Male Where born: Haddington, Berwickshire Registration Number: 644/6 Registration district: Blythswood Civil parish: Glasgow Barony County: Lanarkshire Address: 18 Finlay St Occupation: Labourer Farnister & Works ED: 52 Household schedule number: 30 Line: 4 Roll: CSSCT1871_134 Household Members: Name Age James Brodie 29 Jane Brodie 29 Roblia Brodie 58 Isabella Stevenson 28
Charlotte Niven Cowan Brodie died in Airdrie in 1903.

Could you give his mother's name from both these certificates.

Linda,
It's a pity the death certificate for Ann Brodie doesn't register her husband's name. I'm assuming she died in Barnhill Poorhouse in Springburn where all the deaths would have been registered by the governor. It's odd that her father's name is known ... but not her spouse.
I wouldn't dismiss this death certificate yet ... keep it on the back burner meantime.
Just wondering ... do you have Ann Brodie (and/or) her husband in the 1861 census ? Would be interested to know if Ann was still alive at this time and where she or her husband were living.
